Dun sa RAV4(AT), wala, i just step on the brakes if the darn thing goes too fast, when going down steep grades.

Not realy, yung bagong LC120 series na Prado kinabitan ng Toyota ng Hill Descent Control para automatic yung preno pag sobrang bilis pababa, iba pa rin ang manual trannys.

downside of engine braking is wearing out the clutch faster than normal.

Clarification lang. Engine braking is "Menor" right? (lifting your foot off the accelerator)

Engine braking means downshifting to a gear lower, not merely removing your foot from the accelerator pedal. In effect, you use the revs of the lower gear to which you downshifted to help you slow down your vehicle.

I use engine braking all the time ever since I started driving. For example, lets say i'm travelling 60kph in 4th gear and i'm approaching a redlight on an intersection, i start pressing the brake using my right foot to lessen my speed and while maintaining my right foot on the brake, then I let the engine assist my braking by letting my left foot depress the clutch pedal then shift down to third gear. I do the same procedure till I reach second. This is engine braking for me :-)

Sa AT kasi engine braking depends on your torque converters stall speed. once your revs go below stall speed, more or less parang free wheel ka na. thats why push starting an AT needs lots of speed.

Mas maganda engine brake cuz it acts like an ABS. pero tama din na engine braking wears out the clutch faster and brake pads are cheaper and easier to replace. Explanation nga sa book, todays brake systems are very resistant to brake fade and overheating so it is perectly fine to not use engine braking. Practice of engine braking began with the older cars which had no vacuum assist. Braking was a back breaking job so people opted to used engine braking to slow down.
