i didn't know this na masama pala. but still i follow the manual of my car na no need for idling once you started it. pwede mo ng itakbo agad. ewan ko lang sa mga bansa na nag snow..

Great thread, guys. Great info to know.

So okay... we all know now that warming the car up by idiling is unecessary... so we start the car and drive off right away...

Question: How long until we can turn on the aircon? Puwede rin bang on na kaagad kahit malamig pa yung makina? Won't it add strain to the engine while it's still not at optimal operating temp?

painitin muna konti para makapump muna oil, bago patakbuhin, tama ba o
    mali siya?

Dina_DJ, I think ok lang nman yung aircon kahit malamig pa makina...ang importante do not labor the engine when it is cold. OR in the safer side, NEVER labor your engine malamig man or normal temp.

Actually, it still holds true that you should run your engine. An engine under load will always warm up faster than an engine that's idling.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

definetly you need to warm up the engine not because the engine needs it,because you need to defrost the windshield and turn the heater on or else you will freeze your ass off.

Hybrid cars don't idle in traffic. It would be very nice if this "idling" method can be applied to current cars to lessen fuel consumption and pollution. :D

I usually idle just long enough to check my mirrors, check my fuel level, snap my seatbelt closed and pull down the parking brake.

Learned not to idle too long when I drove a car before without a thermostat. If I idled it, it would take forever to warm up. And it's bad to run a car "cold" for that long. If I drove it after just half a minute's idle, within a kilometer or so, it'd be warmed up.

Sabi kasi dito masama yun to long na idling and if I am only going to run the engine kahit na hindi ko talaga gagamitin, isn't that bad too?

    any comments?
Iyong isa kong sasakyan for EB use only . Paghindi ko ginagamit every 3days warm up for 5 minutes .

Most of the time madaling araw biyahe ko (aroud 4am), my ride is an isuzu xwind, pag start ko usually i idle about 10 seconds lang then drive slowly until such time na ma-reach yung optimal temp nya.

This for a fact, idling only wastes fuel.

Quote from the Canadian Environment Ministry:

•An idling engine releases twice as many exhaust fumes than a vehicle in motion.
•If every driver in Canada avoided idling for 5 minutes a day, we could prevent 1.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from being emitted.
•No more than 30 seconds of idling is needed for oil to circulate through your engine. Many components, such as the wheel bearings, tires and suspension system will only warm up once the vehicle is moving.
•Restarting your car many times has little impact on engine components, adding only around $10 per year to the cost of driving, money that is recovered in fuel savings.
•Ten seconds of idling uses more fuel than restarting the engine.
•Idling can damage your engine since it is not operating at its peak temperature where fuel is completely burned. Fuel residue from incomplete burning can damage engine parts.
•Idling a vehicle for 10 minutes a day uses an average of 100 litres of gas a year. If gas costs 70 cents a litre, you will save $70 per year, just by turning your key.
•During the winter, Canadians idle their vehicles for a combined total of 75 million minutes/day. This is equal to a vehicle idling for 144 years. Although we idle our vehicles about 40% less in summer, we still waste an enormous amount of fuel and money.
•A block heater warms the oil and engine coolant, making it easier to start your vehicle and improving winter fuel economy by as much as 10%.
