I've been with the same company since I finished grad school (4 years) and the problem is I've lost my enthusiasm for work already. I feel very lucky that I love my job, my boss and my coworkers. My boss and coworkers make me look forward to going to the office. However, I am now very unhappy with my salary. I have a lot of friends that moved to other companies is order to increase their salary. Our company is currently cost cutting and the increase and bonus that we had for this year is extremely disappointing. We predict that it will only get worse. In the end our salaries will not reflect our real market value.

My dilemma is if a higher salary is worth having the risk of having a bad job, boss and coworkers? My boss is really really great. He's the type who would never pass on the blame to his staff, he gives more than enough time for reports, he never lets me report for work on a holiday, he sometimes does my work pa :inlove: My coworkers are very nice to me too, parati ako pinagbibigyan Also, all the difficult people at work are gone na and I am surrounded by people that are good to me My workload is not heavy so I still have time to do other things. Everything is perfect except for the salary.

    Would you take the risk?

My problem is my salary is already at the ceiling sa staff level. I won't be getting any increase anymore in the coming years unless I move to officer level. I don't wanna be an officer naman. I don't like to handle people. Masakit pa sa ulo maging officer samin.

I'm not sure if I should just stick to my company since I am happy with all other aspects. But then again, we should be working for money diba?

Hi CFY, yes, you should consider moving while you are still in your productive years. If you get employed in a higher position (and therefore, a higher paying job), it's inevitable that you will handle people. I had the same concerns moving from my original employer to another one since I was being asked to create a team, and make sure it functions well.

You can't go wrong if you stick with your gut and be fair....both to your future company and your future staff.

    Good luck!

Not really, some people work to make both ends meet. as long as they survive ok na. Progressing your career is a different story. From what I see, you want higher pay but don't want responsibility.. well they always go along together so it'll be hard to find a job you want.

    As the saying goes:
    - you'll miss 100% of the shots you'll never take
    - just do it

It's better to move while you're still young. Once you hit a certain age, it's harder to jump to other ships unless you have that X-factor that companies will value.

HI Cathy, i understand the concern of "higher pay, but less responsibility". Unfortunately, most employement structures rewards the managers financially. However, as a staff level worker, take advantage of the situation. It could mean with lesser responsibility, you have more time for something else. Do something on the side, for extra money. It would be great if you find other sources of income. If this sideline thing does not work, you'll be further motivated to focus on your career, and wont hesitate to accept bigger roles / opportunities (and pay) in your company.

Also, here's an underrated side of employement where a lot of folks take for granted:
its easier to get loans since you have the records and necessary requirements, you get company and govt benefits, and a chance to exploit / maximize company resources! ehehe. (overnight parking, office equipment, high speed internet, etc)

It's almost been another year! I feel like I have been performing poorly during the start of 2014. I've been chronically late and have missed meetings and reports because of my personal issues. I know this is very unprofessional and I don't wanna ruin the good reputation I have built with my superiors which is why I'm seriously considering leaving my job and stay at home for a while.

I am in a real dilemma though because I made a promise to my German boss that I will not leave in 2014. My German boss really brightens up my day because he is really the best! My new immediate boss is luckily my BFF pa I am really getting all the support that I need to take advantage of growth opportunities in my career. My BFF supervisor even told me that our AVP is creating opportunities for me. Today my BFF supervisor talked to me that she wants me to replace her position. She and our AVP laid out projects that I need to complete to support my promotion. I am not sure if I really deserve this given my performance at the start of the year. Honestly I am very demotivated and my salary will more or less stay the same since I am earning almost as much as other officers.

Maybe I should really try hard to focus on my career and not let my personal issues affect me na. I need to lessen my internet usage at work too... But there's that side of me na I just wanna stay and rot in my room

Everything is on a silver platter and you still find a reason to refuse it? I find that really sad Cathy.

Other people will literally die for the opportunities that you have thrown your way. Maybe you should follow your instincts and resign. Maybe it will Only be then that you realize what you had and have lost. And that may be a force that will galvanize you to be better in the future. You're in serious self destruct mode now.

I am very confused too. I am thankful that I am surrounded with good family and friends and that I am given all sorts of opportunities. I see the effort of my family and friends to make me happy but I really do not understand why I feel so depressed. And yes, I feel like am slowly self destructing. I don't know what triggered this and how to stop it.

an ergophobe like you probably just needs a virtual hug if you want one rightaway

it's hard to look for heads and tails of such a weird behaviour, much less a cure for. so just don't.

try the kitchen. dudes like me bake homemade bread for starters. the dough between your fingers is therapeutic

own a pet most appropriate to your 'demeanour'. i suggest a jack russell. responsive and great for helping you deal with your anxieties

care for bonsai trees, they're good for a luck and a buck

go on a gap year and post here what you discover out there. expand your horizon and see the bigger picture

and stop talking to retz -just kidding

    I agree with Helios's post.

But you can see a doctor as well. You could be clinically depressed. Thats not your fault. Thats just the way your physiology is. There is real therapy for that. And theres nothing to be ashamed of.

The important thing is... You must try.

pag nawala na gana sa work.. it's time to move on..

Cath, I don't think that any field will let you rise up the ranks to a pay level you can live comfortably without having to manage people. Even in the field of engineering and IT, higher-ups manage people rather than do individual technical work.

If you want though, lipat ka sa company namin. There are a lot of positions that don't require you to lead a team, but the pay grade is pretty high (unless you're already at that job group and still not content with the pay hehe). Would be nice to work with you
