I mentioned earlier I was going to order a Xiaomi Yi as a rear camera. But, its bulk made me think it over since it uses a suction cup. Plus, it was harder to find and it used a battery which will make it problematic in the hot desert climate I live in. So, I decided to buy an older Black Box G1W-C. As a rear-facing dashcam, I think it's okay, looking at sample footage from YT.

I have a Black Box G1W-C dashcam arriving next week. So, I put the Spytec A119 as a rear-facing DVR. Not bad.
I tested it in rainy weather.

Comparing image quality between the Black Box G1W-C and Spytec A119. Note that the EV Exposure for the G1W-C is 0 while it's +1/3 on the A119. The G1W-C is also at 1080p while the A119 is at 1440p.

Here is a full 5-minute raw clip from the Black Box G1W-C. The +100F temperatures (plus the harsh direct sunlight) must be causing the somewhat so-so, video quality. Perhaps, I was hoping too much that the video quality of the G1W-C would come close to the A119. It's still okay because license plates would still be readable even though we don't have front plates in Arizona-registered cars.

This is the matching A119 (front-facing) clip for the G1W-C (rear-facing) test clip below. I suppose there's no way 4-year old tech can match 1-year old tech.

This one is with the G1W-C up front. I had the exposure at +1/3 which turned out to be too much white for my tastes. So, I loaded the clip into Windows Movie Maker and lowered the brightness a bit before uploading it into YT.

Night performance of the G1W-C. Unfortunately, I haven't cleaned the car in over a month and the windshield is quite dirty with a hazy condensate coating on the windshield inside and dried rain splatter on the outside.
The EV Exposure is still at -2/3.

I learned a lesson today which is to not leave a dashcam in the car with the extreme desert heat. My G1W-C may be capacitor-based. But, the heat inside the car was still hot enough to warp the plastic casing just enough so that the front part keeps popping off. Oh well. It still makes a decent surveillance cam when hooked up to my PC. Much better than my old Logitech webcam.
I see the wife just came home from the mall. Using the freebie Contacam as the surveillance software.
I normally used the G1W-C as a rear-facing dashcam. I'll probably replace it with another Spytec A119.Last edited by Jun aka Pekto; August 28th, 2017 at 02:19 PM.

Both g1w and A119 are excellent bang for buck cams. The G1W is still a great buy since it has great pq and costs half of the A119.
