Gas prices to go up at midnight
MANILA, Phippines -- Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. and independent oil firm Eastern Petroleum Corp. announced Friday they will be increasing pump prices of gasoline by P1 a liter and of diesel and kerosene by P1.50 a liter starting one stroke after midnight or 12:01 a.m. Saturday.
EPC chair Fernando Martinez said in an interview the price hike was due to a "very big gap" between international and local prices.
"The Mean of Platts Singapore (benchmark price) for diesel has reached $160 a barrel," said Martinez, who is also chair of the Independent Philippine Petroleum Companies Association.
Asked to confirm whether domestic oil firms' under-recoveries, or the gap between increases in international prices and those at the local pumps, were now P10 a liter, he said this was "more or less" so.
"Unless there is a substantial correction in world prices, that would be a likely situation," Martinez said. "But this would have to be confirmed at the end of this month when we get the average price
