Huh? I thought ethanol's cheaper than gas. I sorta remember when Shell 1st intro'd their e10. a peso or 2 cheaper than their unleaded.

If it IS more expensive, then the oil companies probably would be against it and would have to raison d' etre at all -- other than that poc sugar-baron politician whom I'd like to pound into the ground despite him being younger and fitter than me (hey, Im a dirty fighter ... very dirty).

That was because there was a P1 government price subsidy for the Shell E10. Shell Unleaded didn't get the price subsidy. The reason for the price subsidy was for the people to buy the "cheaper" gasoline. Once it became a habit, no one will question why they prefer choosing E10 over regular unleaded gasoline.

In short, you were brainwashed, dude.

But the government pays for the more expensive gasoline with a subsidy, so the gas companies earn just the same with either choice of fuels. So why should they gas companies make any noise?

It's food versus fuel. The basic problem of all crop-based biofuels. Which is why crop-based ethanol is a dead end. It's something we saw in the oil crisis of 08... as the demand for ethanol increased due to the increase in oil prices, food prices shot up abnormally... beyond the spike that would be caused by the increasing price of oil.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

I remember there was a time that farmers were being encouraged to grow jatropha... which is useless for anything other than biodiesel. The myopia of our policy makers is truly staggering.

we can't even supply our own country with enough rice, and yet we allot land for fuel use.

The government agency pushing for Jatropha claims that this plant can grow well on land that are not fit for growing crops and the plant uses less water.

Unfortunately experience in other countries would say the opposite. The plant needs the same land as ones used for food crops and requires lots of watering to produce enough bio-matter to make enough ethanol.

there was a great natgeo article tackling this food vs. fuel issue.

one innovation was the use of algae for biodiesel, hopefully their research would bear fruition, since algae won't use as much land as current biofuel crops

But it is not yet practical to produce bio-diesel from algae. So commerical production is many years in the very least if at all possible. And the cost of algae bio-diesel might be expensive, just like ethanol. So best not to expect "cheap" bio-fuels any time soon.

Hindi brainwashing yun GH ... more like traitorous, deceptive, and just plain LYING.

I even remember reading in their justification for using ethanol that it was cheaper.

3 oil giants hike fuel prices by P1/L
    06/08/2010 | 10:45 AM

Pilipinas Shell, Petron Corp., and Chevron Philippines increased their diesel, gasoline, and kerosene prices by P1 per liter on Tuesday.

A GMA Flash Report said Shell implemented its price hike at 12:01 a.m., while Petron's took effect 6 a.m.

Chevron corporate communications manager Antonio Nebrida also said in a text message that the oil firm hiked its fuel prices at 6 a.m.

Other independent oil players have yet to advise whether they would follow suit. — Sophia Dedace/LBG/RSJ, GMANews.TV

Blame global crude prices... they've gone up in the past two weeks.

The question of the small players and raising their prices is "when", not "if"...

You could always join the legions who have switched from gasoline to LPG...

We should call ourselves the "Legion of Boom". :grin; (oh, yeah... taken already... but it's a fitting name...)
