I wanted to buy one dati for anti coding but a former owner told me to forget it kasi sakit sa ulo at mahal ng parts. Sa age na ng car, sunod sunod na daw kailangan palitan ang parts eh.
I agree with the above post. Old Volvo's aren't really the best looking cars out there. Napakaluma tingnan kahit hindi naman ganon kaluma. Dahil konti lang ang meron dito, hirap ka sa parts. At dahil lumang Volvo, hindi ganon kaganda ang performance (unless of course nakahanap ka ng magandang T5). If you're into European cars, best look into the Mercs nalang. The W124 design is timeless, durability is great, parts are more abundant and there are more people who can fix it.
Sorry, already bought one, dream car ko talaga actually yung boxy na Volvo, its what makes a Volvo a Volvo.
I guess I just have to take care of it and drive it carefully, don't wanna burn a hole in my pocket.
apir pards! true car lovers are stubborn peeps!!! hahaha im selling my Sentra now (a b13) to get an Altima, I like the Altima so much, it's a 90s dream car. Pigil ng pigil sa akin erpat ko, pero pag nabenta ko Sentra ko, patay kang Altima ka sa akin ngayon :D hahaha!
I would have suggested a V40 though or the least a V70 (curvy front, boxy rear), just so it may be some years youngers. ;)

But if you really love the car, wala naman pipigil sayo eh. And surely, you will find ways to keep it running strong. After all, it's the enjoyment that you garner that matters in the end. ;)
We used to have one (2.5 normally aspirated A/T variant 'GLE'). Naalala ko, hirap na hirap si Jemson kabitan ng Autopage alarm. In the end, he did it but the headlamps would flash along with the parklamps and the rear doors can't trigger the alarm when opened. At least the ignition kill and shock sensors work.
It's a very solid car. Super smooth and quiet inside. A good long distance hauler.
Very versatile too. Managed to cram in a tall cabinet by folding all the seats (front passenger seats fold down also). Dashboard to tailgate yung cabinet.
Maintenance parts are cheap. Repair parts (e.g. the rack and pinion) are kinda expensive. Eventually sold it because my mom wanted a bigger headache (a 2001 Nissan Patrol). Maybe we should've just kept the Volvo (Patrol is at the repair shop yet again).

Patrol? Loss of power. Stemming from various sources including a head gasket failure, engine sensors, etc.
No idea on the FC. I mostly use it for city errands. But performance and handling is good when out on the open road. Feels like a very expensive Euro sedan. Also got ours as a used unit at a good price. Previous owner was fed up with expensive dealership maintenance.
At least now there are third party shops catering to Volvo.

Volvos can be perceived as hard to mantain, but there are some parts interchangeable with models from other brands, including Ford and Mazda for example. After all, the 850 is still one of the most reliable cars from its time.
Mitsu parts can fit the earlier Volvo S40's also.![]()

On a side note, Volvo cordoned off some select parking slots at the Eastwood mall specially only for Volvo cars. I think they got 30 or 40 slots but i only saw just 1 850 parked to the dismay of other cars that couldnt find any parking space.

Anyway, 97 Model 850 EST A/T, bought it at the mid 200K range, the Lambda light is lighting up and the speedometer isn't working so I need to have those checked, hopefully the oxygen sensor is just fouled up, leather dash cover at the passenger side is bubbling as well. Other than that I still have the new girlfriend high, can't believe this baby is finally mine, wohoo!
The guy I bought this from showed off his 850 Turbo but he wasn't selling it. Holy sh*t call me a 850 Turbo newbie but that thing could fly! It could probably beat most souped up Hondas out there, I could feel the "falling roller coaster" feeling in my stomach as it accelerated. Wow, I thought it was all about the boxy look and safety but I didn't know the turbo had that much power.
Anyway, next step is to bring the 850 I got to a Volvo mechanic to give it a general check up, maybe have the oil changed and have the brake pads inspected if they're still thick enough. Yeah I know, don't bring it to Viking, I've heard there are some former Viking mechanics out there who started their own shops.
Hmm, what else? It came with 18 inch rims, I don't know if I'm just a newbie but they sometimes hit the wheel wells on bumps.
i have a 97 gle its been with us for 10 years... lamig ng aircon hehe since taga baguio pa ako medyo hirap ako mag source ng parts..... matibay ang volvo almost 200k na natakbo ng sa amin pero ngyon medyo di na siya masyado nagagamit kase lumalabas na mga sakit nya since wala pa ako time ibaba sya ng manila itinabe ko muna sya sa garahe
The abs on ours was lit but it was just a rear wheel sensor error. The speedo and odo are prone to failure because of the plastic gear in the cluster, but you can still check actual mileage when you plug it in the diagnostic computer.
