Honestly, explorer pa din. Toy car lang talaga yung FJ Cruiser kasi kung serious ako sa off-roading I'd get a Jeep Rubicon or probably a Merc G-Wagon. Hell even a Hilux can perform at its best.

    One is a smaller 5-seater (it's a bit shorter than a Fortuner)...

....while the other one is a larger 7-seater, I guess it really depends on what you need.

Explorer is still a good option.
In terms of off-roadability, the Explorer isn't that bad if you'll just do mild off-roading.

Explorer test by Japan's 4x4 magazine:

It depends what's gonna be the primary use of the vehicle.
If not 80-90% off-road, you could choose the Explorer.

But beware of the numerous headaches the Explorer gives to its owners.

The FJ cruiser is nearing its end-of-life and IINM, Toyota will soon axe the FJ from the market.

Your choice still boils down to the end.

I would go for the Explorer. It looks elegant enough (for a SUV) and has much of the practical features like 7 seating and 3rd row folding seats for more cargo space. BUT I hate to use the manual 3rd row folding system because it was clearly was not thought through by the engineers who designed it. Obviously they just removed the motors from the powered version and simply added pull cords to release the locks (along with the 1000 step instructions) so you can push and pull the seats into the position you want.

As much as the FJ Cruiser looks cute and retro, it lacks much of the practicality and usefulness.

    explorer nga din.

fj cruiser is for retards. why buy a vehicle that supposedly seats 5 but only seats 2 in comfort and 3 in, er, discomfort?

Nung nasa abroad pa ako, ang katapan ng FJ Cruiser price-wise are the Rav4 and CRV. Dito sa atin Explorer pala ang ka-price range nya?!?!?!

Feature-wise sa Explorer na ako since they've sorted out the issues they got nung unang lumabas ito.

This coming from someone who hates American cars before hehehe.

This car would be a replacement for my bk pajero. I have another fullsized suv which will serve the purpose of the explorer, but I just love those bells and whistles of the explorer, and of course, the riding comfort.

If I'll get the FJ, it would be used mainly for solo trips, weekends with the wife, and occasionally, off the road trips with friends.

Btw, can the second row seats of the FJ recline? How's the legroom?

The original FJ40 (from where the current "FJ" is derived) seated only two people in comfort, both driver and front seat passenger. The rear passengers were left by themselves to bounce around the place

So, its gonna be primarily a "Toy" 4x4? From what I understood above. I'll go for the FJ, I think there are a lot of off-road kits for it in the aftermarket scene already.

I think I should have asked: Which is more fun to drive?

the explorer drives like a sedan so it will be more fun to drive daily, while the fj cruiser drives like a truck but it is a serious off roader. so unless one of your hobbies is off roading then the explorer has a huge advantage over the fj. like everyone has already said the fj is more of a toy car than daily driven car.

The FJ is okay if you're looking for a rugged off-roader on a budget.

Using the word "budget" loosely, since the Jimny is cheaper and more capable...

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

    Welcome back Dr. wiretap.

Maganda nga Rubicon, a friend here has one. But it's out of the budget. Actually, the explorer would already stretch my budget as I'll just be using the proceeds from my recently sold Pajero.

Both cars (FJ and Explorer) won't be my daily drive. If I'll get the FJ, it would really be just a toy car for our occasional offroading. If I'll get the Explorer, definitely, I won't use it for offroad because of it's ground clearance and very low bumper. I would have already bought the Explorer when it was first sold here in the Philippines if not for the greediness of the dealers.

FJ Cruiser or Explorer?
