For an idea of how bad US regs affect engines, the 2.0 Lancer was only 120hp when first released in the US. Mitsu just didn't have the budget to retune the non-MIVEC engine to bring it back to 140hp. Current SR20s, in direct ignition applications, are down to around 130+ hp only. The Ford Lynx RS is 'only' 140hp, but 150hp or so without cats, and easily 165hp or so with exhaust mods.

May 17th, 2006 11:14 PM #22SR18 ba yung 1.8 na altima? wouldn't it have a figure of about 130hp?
altimas are pretty fast, i chased one once en route to Subic raceway while driving a B16-powered EF hatchback...i wasn't pushing it but i knew while chasing it that the alty had a lot of power on tap. had we gone all-out, i knew it would put up a very good fight with my hatch.

CORRECTION:
7g VR DOHC = has 165hp ..not 163hp and vice versa
8g VR 2.5L SOHC = has 163 hp only! ..but higher torque ...obviously!

among the vehicles listed above, the galant vr has the highest hp rating. unfortunately, torque is not one of its assets. thus, mahina ito sa acceleration compared to the other vehicles. it's a good revving engine though, given its 7500 rpm redline.

AFAIK, the Lancer has only been a few years in the US. And yeah, the engine made more power in the old NA Eclipse... but I think the new MIVEC 2.0 has a few of those horses back... maybe around 135hp or so.

momoyster,
torque is for pulling while HP is the one you are using for acceleration.
you have high HP, you definitely have a good acceleration.
that's why SUVs have high torque, their main purpose is for hauling stuffs.
rayban7g,
i stand corrected, i made a research and found out that i made a mistake 7g indeed have 165hp & 210NM of torque while 8g has 163hp & a higher 228NM of torque.

basti, i stand corrected
. i always thought it was the other way around. when we were about to buy our galant vr, we went to a nissan dealership to look at the cefiro which was just nwely introduced back then. the sales agent gave me a manual for nissan sales agents (supposedly for internal use only) wherein the altima, cefiro, galant vr, and the cefiro were extensively compared. sayang naiwala ko na, ang daming info dun.

niky,
only the 98+ 626 (GF body) has the FS-DE of the Lynx RS. the pre-98 626 has the FS-E (not distributorless).
as for the US spec 118hp of the FS-E (pre-98) you may be right there, the figure might be derated. the local FS-E has no catalytic converter and (might) have no EGR valve (the JDM FS-ZE has no EGR). both of these "features" reduce power substantially, as much as 10hp from the cat alone i believe.
But it appears the issue is only in those units coming from the Alabama, USA plant. Nevertheless,...
