So was it really Android 8.1? I know the other generic 2DIN model of Stapon also advertised Android 8.1 (actually "8.1 Go", whatever that means) that turned out to be Android 4.4.4. If it is, does AA install natively? I ask because AA does not run on devices ID'd as a tablet and those running below Android 5.0.

Good news though, Google Maps recently integrated audio controls for your chosen music app in its interface so the experience is getting closer to AA.

    nougat nakuha ko bro
didnt bother to upgrade nor complain sa seller
will check AA later, not really sure how to; does having a "car settings" on notif drop down mean it has AA?

Ayos na ayos na yan kung Nougat talaga. Just check if the Android API level is indeed 24 or above. You can use any diagnostic app like CPU-Z, AIDA64, Droid Hardware, etc. to determine the real specs of your device.

Having "car settings" does not mean AA can run natively. AA requires API level 21 and up on a qualified phone device. Although as I said earlier, some people have managed to side load the app onto their head units or tablets. The" car settings" are primarily for integration of the head unit with your car's systems i.e. volume, day/night illumination levels, back-up settings, notifications via CAN bus, etc. Just try to install AA straight from the Playstore and you will know. It's no big loss naman if it does not since your hardware specs seem capable of running Maps/Waze and other apps simultaneously and Android 7.0 handles multitasking better than earlier versions. Meron pa nga multi-window feature wherein you can have 2 apps open simultaneously.

Good luck bro. Your unit seems promising. Let us know how it goes.

Your phone bro. But AA is not likely to project to your head unit since your head unit is not AA compatible. But please do try nevertheless, who knows....

Yes, your unit has a Mirror Link app to connect to an iPhone and Android phone. Mirror link passively duplicates what's exactly on your phone's screen onto the head unit. Downside ng Mirror Link is kailangan naka ON yung phone screen palagi and more importantly, AA's integrated functions are NOT transferred to the head unit and car's controls (i.e. light sensor for screen to operate in day/night mode, steering wheel controls, external microphone, GPS sensor). Everything still entirely runs off your phone, and with the screen ON the whole time, ubos na phone battery mo by the end of a long drive even if it is charging via the Mirror Link USB cable. Additionally, you have to mount your phone near the windshield for it to maintain GPS line of sight and cellular connectivity.

AA works very differently as it acts like a separate application that is working and displayed on your head unit. Your phone's screen could be showing/running a different app or even turned OFF while AA continues to work normally on your head unit. It will take advantage of your head unit's GPS, microphone and steering wheel controls thereby lessening the phone's work load. Using AA results in a net positive battery charge for me by the end of a trip. You can even tuck your phone away into the center console or dash compartment and it will still maintain GPS and cellular connectivity because it will be using the external antennas of your head unit.

There is a lot of software and hardware qualifying work to certify that AA functions correctly on a head unit. Aside from the certification work and expense, I suppose Google also gets paid licensing or royalty fees for using the Android Auto name on a device. This is why AA compatible head units are usually only available from either OEM or branded aftermarket head units. Google wants proper integration for the app to work as intended - which is to provide a seamless and distraction-free experience while using all the navigation, communication and infotainment functions of your car and phone.

For AA to work like it should on your generic android head unit, you need to separately buy an AA/Carplay USB dongle that acts as a projection interface between your phone and head unit. There is a simplistic comparison between AA/Carplay and Mirror Link modes on this item's page:

Auto Link Dongle Car Link Dongle Link Dongle Portable Universal USB Black Navigation Player Smart Link Apple CarPlay | Lazada PH

This dongle may not be necessary if your unit can multitask smoothly and you can live with "lesser" integration (more fiddling with the head unit). He he...

    Hope that helps.

P.S. A slight downside to the dongle is that it will not provide a net positive charge to your phone when using AA/Carplay so your phone's battery still drains albeit at a significantly slower rate compared to Mirror Linking. Original/certified AA head units will at least be net neutral due to the 1.5A output requirement of Google for the AA USB port.

Exactly. But I suppose that is a small price and inconvenience to pay for getting AA/Carplay functionality considering the ridiculous price premium of certified AA//Carplay head units from the likes of Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, Sony, etc. ($400 up to $1,200+)

I use AA exclusively when driving. Ang smooth ng integration with music, calls/texts, navigation and Assistant - more so if you have steering wheel controls. It feels just like one unified app for everything when driving.

Sa akin lang yan ha. Ask others what they think.

how's the quality of generic android head units?

i'm choosing between a 10 inch generic android head unit being sold in FB with the following specs:

    android 8.1
    10in
    quadcore
    16gb
    2gb ddr
    1080 full hd
    1024x600
    reverse camera
    P11,000 with installation
    1 month replacement warranty

    *ctto

    or

    pioneer avh-a215bt
    6.2in
    with stereo panel
    pioneer reverse camera
    P16500 with installation
    1 year pioneer warranty

    *ctto

the android looks better because it's 10in but hesitant of the qualtity and lack of warranty

main purpose is to use the head unit for reverse camera and TVplus installation. don't want to spend that much, planning to sell the car next year.

if you have any recommended units or sellers please let me know. thanks!

Do the generic Android head units still use resistive screens (instead of the capacitive touchscreens on a modern android phone)?
