Let's face it...here Audi's aren't anywhere close to BMWs in popularity. In other countries its otherwise...Even the Germans prefer Audi over BMW. And people acknowlege that Audi has been dominant in the track...Winning almost every Le Mans in the past...what 6 years or so?

Inventing quattro which creamed the competition during the 80s in almost every rally race...

    Is it marketing over product?

I wonder why most every juan dela cruz would still like a BMW...

Marketing and distribution base. BMW dealerships far out number Audi dealerships. BMW has always had good marketing strategies and its probably the reason why BMW and MB often run 1 and 2 when it comes to sales in the luxury end of the business.

Para lang to try out, nag-test-drive kami ng A6 mga 1998 or 1999. The feel was pretty far from my BMW. Parang mas matagtag... kinda like an 850 series Volvo yung ride. It was also kinda nervous around corners. Malayong malayo sa E34 ko. In arangkada naman, talo sya sa mga MB and later model BMW namin.

    So, we said no thanks.

Take into consideration also maintenance, service, and aftermarket (third party) support. BMW has a stronger network.

I think racing success only plays a part in a car brand's image. Because if not, then Renault should also be dominating the world car sales chart.

Its true that Audis are quite popular in Germany (I see alot of A3 and A4 Avants) and in the UK but over here in Asia, it seems the opposite. My friends general impression on Audi is that quality is so-so and second hand value quite poor.

Personally, I find the A4 Avants quite cool but I find the space a tad small..

    Its marketing. With taglines like:

    'Ultimate Driving Machine' or

    'Sheer Driving Pleasure'

...decades of marketing their product as the ultimate driver's car (not to mention decent and quality products), makes people want one. At least in the Philippines, that is. Audi isn't in that kind of position... yet.

marketing? maybe so, but most informed car buyers test drive cars from both models back-to-back (as well as other competitors like MB) before making a decision. i have had two car buying decisions in the last 4 years:

BMW 330 vs Audi S4 vs MB C320. winner - BMW. mainly for the driving experience, looks and handling despite the Audi's superior power and quattro

BMW X5 vs Infiniti FX45 vs VW Touareg (walang Audi SUV nun eh). winner - VW. like the looks, features/toys, and interior more

what's my point? stop to consider that many people will compare products from both companies with a fine tooth comb and pick the one that comes out on top depending on their needs and budget. maybe more people think BMW has a better product, but i obviously think this is not always true.

Thanks guys...very interesting. Seems like the world is headed one way and asia another...wonder is the old auto prominence thing didn't help audi. in actuality BMW and Mercedes are losing market share in sophisticated markets...

    hehehe....

sometimes its not about speed and racing successes that the brand brings....sometimes its the image that the car you're driving will give you.....sometimes its the marketing....sometimes its individual preferences in styling, looks, driving dynamics etc... and sometimes if a certain car will get you laid more often when driving it around town than the others.... eh saan ka pa.....BMW et es...herehrehrehrher

If Audi has a better recent race history that BMW why do people like BMWs?
