And Honda VTEC in F1 did not help them? are we comparing apples to apples? Remember what Le Mans did for Jaguar? Porsche?

Let me put it this way...
What's all the Audi rant about???? hehe...
Are they good cars? Yes... Are they competitive with BMW/Benz? Yes, for decades... Why aren't they selling as much? Well, maybe because they're not doing enough marketing and adapting to customer's wants?
It's not rocket science dude, take it easy hehe.
It's strange that people ask people their opinion but reacts strangely if they replied with sensible replies.

Yes, Audi are good cars, but BMW is the current sales leader in terms of luxury sales. What's the problem?
It's a number of things. For one, a perception of class and exclusivity. Part of the reason Mercedes lost their lead to BMW is that their forays downmarket have been fraught with problems. BMW has managed to go downmarket without tarnishing its image so much, going so far as to create a brand new line (the Mini) to market front wheel drive cars. It's this somewhat snobbish dedication to the longitudinal layout and rear-wheel drive that makes even the cheapest BMW seem upmarket.
Now take the Audi A4. Nice car? Yes. But it's front-wheel drive, or front-wheel drive based, at the very least. And it shares a lot of nuts and bolts with a Volkswagen. It does get sales, in recognition of the inherent niceness of the car, but it would never have quite the cachet of a BMW 3 or Mercedes C, as, like a Volvo, it's forever doomed to be just slightly downmarket because of the drivetrain layout.
Despite Audi's success in racing, their cars are all still transverse based FWD or AWD, with the engine hanging far out over the nose. This doesn't make for very exciting handling. And that does matter. People buying up into the luxury class from below are often yuppies and up-and-comers who often drive themselves rather than being chauffered. There's absolutely nothing wrong with being chauffered in an FWD vehicle, but in driving, the rear wheel drive BMW will still feel more special.
And it's that arrogant touting of the rear wheel drive layout that makes BMW seem more attractive to the entry-level luxury buyers. And the fact that, for some odd reason, the current leadership of VAG feels the need to make VWs more upmarket and more exclusive than before (they're no longer just "people's cars") makes the decision between Audi and VW that much harder on the other end.
So yes, Audis are nice cars, but they're not quite able to challenge BMW yet. But the slowly sliding Mercedes may have something to worry about.
Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

I tend to agree with 5speed and niky's points. It's not all about who innovated what first. At the consumer level, what's going to matter is: does the car deliver in practical, day-to-day use? Is it well-rounded enough to dish out more or less equal doses of beauty, performance, comfort, reliability, affordability and prestige at the same time?
Whether you agree with it or not, the fact remains that BMW has been more successful in projecting that impression around these parts. Now it may not seem right to you, but that's reality.
