had the same problem before. the culprit: thermoswitch for the fan. replaced it already. though in the long-term, nasira ang radiator ko kasi dahil sa overheating but the radiator was repaired too.

grabe ang over heating problem mo.

Some things you can do to diagnose your overheating prob.

    1. Engine off and cold, open rad cap and reserviour cover. Look for signs of oil or rust in the water or coolant. Rust means your rad is dirty and needs to be flushed or overhualed. Oil means you may have a busted cylinderhead gasket. Good time to fill it to the neck if low on coolant.
    2. Check rad cap for damage. Replace if needed.
    3. Check your oil for sign of contamination. If milky colored you have a damaged head gasket replace asap.
    4. Check hoses for buldges, damage leaks. Some leaks are only visible when engine is running. Its small that it needs pressure to push out the water.
    5. With rad cap off, star the engine. See if coolant spurts out. This is a sign of engine prob cant recall what kind.
    6. Hold the upper radiator hose. If it gets hot as your temp goes up your thermostat is working. If upper hose is still cold but your temp is increasing its busted.
    7. Look in the rad cap and see if coolant is flowing. Should move when tstat opens.
    8. Your fans should turn on automatically. If you reach normal operating temp and it still does not turn on have a mechanic check your thermoswitch and fans.
    9. Turn on your AC it should trigger the fans to start.
    10. Smell your exhuast if it smells like coolant you have a problem. Your burning coolant and most likely have head gasket prob.
    11. Water pumps usually have a weep hole that "spits" water when the pump needs replacement.
    12. BTW, before starting the car, check your belts for correct tightness. Should move no more than 1/4 of an inch. And check for signs of damage such as cracks and shinny surfaces.
    13. If you are losing water and cant find the source, go to a properly equipped shop and have them do a pressure test on your cooling system.

Thanks to tsikot and MFI. Thats where I learned most of this stuff.

BTW, the proper way to check if your thermostat is functioning correctly is to remove it and put it in boiling water. If it opens your good to go. If it stays closed, replace. You might need a mechanic to remove and return it if you have not done it before.

Last reminder, never open your rad cap when its hot.

a water sending unit is different from the thermoswitch. one sends the temp reading to the gauge inside the car and the other is responsile for turning on the fans. which one did you change?
