I bought my 2nd hand altis last May, and recently napansin ko na mahina na ang lamig ng aircon pag tanghali.

I had it checked sa Robinaire sa Imelda Ave., Cainta. They checked the freon level and mababa ng daw, nasa 150 dapat daw nasa 200 yun. And immediately, without checking anything else, sabi nila sa evaporator daw may leak. And they quoted 3,500 for labor and 6,500 for the evaporator.

I also brought it in another aircon shop near my place sa ortigas extension. Freon levels were checked, mababa na nga daw; the technician also checked yun mga fittings wala naman daw traces of oil leak. This shop quoted 2,500 for the labor and 4,500 for the evaporator.

So my question is - is it the evaporator the common culprit pag mahina na ang lamig ng altis? dapat ba meron pang ibang test na ginawa to check?

Also, is the quotation of 2,500 and 4,500 for labor and evaporator fair enough?

    Thanks!

Aside from loose fittings, the evaporator is the culprit for refrigerant leaks (before it was freon, now its R-134A).

Not sure on the price of the Altis evaporator but it also depends on the quality of the replacement. Have the shop check it also if some minor welding can do the trick; my sister's old 1.6E also had an Evap leak and Frigidzone welded it; lasted 2 years and the car was eventually sold with the A/C still running cool.

Kamias Road in Q.C. (sa kanto near Xavierville). Theyre not the cheapest but so far okay naman yung work nila.

Try calling also Excellar in Banawe as they sell a/c parts. (you can google it).

One peeve i have with modern vehicles is a good number of them require the entire dash to be removed for the A/C to be serviced. Something i dont like since at times, this can be the cause for rattles later on.

    Thanks Sir!

I agree with the dash thing. It's too cumbersome, and could result in electrical/electronic issues too later on if not done properly.

Is the price quoted at Ceejays for the Altis with the Denso a/c? This type requires the whole dash to be removed so the labor is higher then the usual a/c servicing on cars where the evaporator can be pulled out from behind the glove compartment.

Thanks sa reply rdc and admiral. I decided to bring the car to mang mario yesterday morning, kahit medyo malayo from my place. I called him the day before and gave me an estimate of 7K for evap replacement and labor. So I went for it, para maexperience na din anf infamous na mang mario.

I got there at around 8:10am. Walang leak sa labas, and as expected busted na ang evaporator, Norman showed me the kungg saan ang butas and yung traces ng oil.

230PM natapos gawin, medyo natagalan since may mga inaattend pa na ibang customers in between. But that's fine, OK naman kakawentuhan si mang mar and the other customers.

Result - Malamig na ang buga ng aircon, temp setting is pegged sa middle, not even close to the coldest setting. Praying that it stays this way forever

Total Damage - Replaced Evaporator, Expansion Valve, Labor = P8,000... nakahingi pa ako ng konting tawad dyan

2002 Altis E mahina ang lamig.
