..why would anyone subsidize a part-timer? that fact that he's a part-timer...

drivers are the lifeblood of Grab which they do not own

they have to keep drivers interested in driving for them -- which means drivers have to make a decent living driving for Grab

if the drivers can't earn enough organically then the company has to provide subsidy to maintain the illusion that driving for Grab is good way to make a living

they were making a loss on every ride

they were subsidizing rides

syempre they gotta provide 2 things --

1. prices of rides should be low enough to make the public keep using uber

2. drivers have to make enough money to keep driving for uber

those things cannot happen at the same time

so the company has to subsidize (burn cash)
