OT: 3 speed lang ba ang A/T ng Toyota these days?
Just think of it this way. D is for all around driving. The next lower gear is for slightly steep driving, up or downhill. Uphill for more grunt from the lower gear, downhill to prevent the car from upshifting and driving downhill faster (engine brake comes to mind). L is for really steep inclines, but sometimes 2 works there as well. Depends on conditions (load, traction, gradient, etc).

On the Innova's transmission, D3 is enough for baguio... you can use 2 for steep parking ramps, but very few roads in Baguio are that steep.
RE: 2 on a parking ramp... important so that you don't have to press too hard on the throttle to go up... when the ramp is wet, you don't want to use too much gas on the climb, as all this will do is spin the wheels. Especially if the dork in front of you has stopped at the ramp exit, forcing you to stop mid-slope.

December 18th, 2008 10:14 PM #14L -keeps it in the lowest gear, usually used when towing heavy load slowly and you don't want to upshift when you release the gas pedal.
I seldom use it since the tranny uses the 1st gear when you're just accelerating in D mode.
2- keeps it in second gear- useful for relatively long steep downhills for engine braking but it is mostly used on icy roads where you don't want too much torque which will cause wheelspin.
D- standard driving mode uses the 1st-to the highest gear. I use this 99% of the time.
O/D off- keeps it off the overdrive gear so the tranny uses only 1st to 3rd gear. useful when engine braking on a light long downhill, but seldome used nowadays
Most people try use 2 or L when they need acceleration, in my opinion you don't need to do this, keeping it in D will do, it will shift down if you need more power anyway, if you really need to put up the revs and power during overtaking, release the gas a little bit then stomp it to the floor, it will make the a/t go into the emergency power mode, it will downshift and will keep it in that gear till near redline or when you trottle down a little bit.
R- to go into reverse (duh!)
P- park mode

How about yung mga ibang auto na walang 2 and L? Yung iba kasi D, P, N and R lang options.

Sir/Madam,

You only need to shift to D to make the car move forward, sir. The Avanza manual strongly recommends against using L and 2 (meron na bang 3 ang bagong Avanza?), even on inclines, to avoid overheating the transmission. See page 91 (or thereabouts) of the Owner's Guide/Manual.
All you need to know about shifting properly is in the Owner's Guide/Manual, sir.
I hope this helps.
