Advantage is that you have enough low end grunt to haul weight. Downside is FC. For a given engine speed, your road speed is slower. For example yung Avanza na either 1.3 or 1.5 MT at 100Kmh, yung engine mo isalready churning almost 4000 rpm na at 5th gear! Eh sa Vios its only 2,750 rpm at 5th gear. Sa Avanza AT its around 3000-3250 if am not mistaken. My guess is is that in the long run the 1.5 AT will be the most fuel efficient in the lineup.
Are you sure about the Vios 100kph* only 2750rpm? Sa Altis ko kasi 100kph is already a bit past 3000rpm * 5th gear..

    Picard,

    Slightly OT:
For the Vios, if not 2,750rpm at 100kph, then it should be close. Its expected that the Altis (1.8L MT) requires a higher RPM for the same speed kasi its final drive ratio is is shorter (4.058) kesa Vios (3.777). Sorry I couldn't find the gear ratios for the 1.6 MT. Computations are adjusted for local stock tire diameters.

Here are some numbers including Avanza at 3000 RPM:

At 3000 RPM at 5th gear, road speed (KPH) is at:

    Avanza 1.3MT = 80
    Avanza 1.5MT = 85
    Altis 1.8 MT = 104
    Vios 1.5 MT = 108
    Avanza 1.5 AT in overdrive = 97

[quote=Ludwig;732289]Ahh, now I get it. That is exactly what I also noticed. I had been telling my wife that the first gear is practically useless. After about a second or two in first gear I have to shift na to second since the engine sounds loaded, and that the rpm needle is already registering a high value.
This is why I always read this thread. I learn something new each time! Thank you sir cpudle!

No problem. I do the same too sa shifting . As soon as puwede na magupshift, kambiyo na ko kaagad. I can't wait to get to 3rd gear kasi at 1st and second, parang pagong yung kotse at low rpms.

Ayos na ayos! buhay na buhay talaga dito ah.

Hmmm...

I was just puzzled kasi if this is the case, in theory mas magiging mataas pala ang top speed ng VIOS kesa sa Altis. I've done 150kph with my 1.6 altis * around 4500rpm.

Sabi ng SA ko hanggang ngayon wala pa din daw dumadating na units from the plant. December 9 pa ako nag pa reserve. So 1 month na pala ako waiting. I've checked other dealers in Metro Manila and it's true na na wala units available and mahaba na din daw ang pila ng mga nag pareserve.

Would you know kung ilan ang allocation ng plant sa mga dealers per vehicle, model and color? Or depende ba yan sa dami ng POs per dealer sa cut-off date na binigay ng planta?

    Sorry guys medyo naiinip lang...TIA

I've been tempted to do the same thing.

i once tried do straight to 2nd gear shift from fullstop but the tendency is i always make high rev para di mamatayan ng engine. so it might in a way affect sa fc. so balik na lang ako ulit sa 1st gear para mas safe.
