December 5th, 2012 09:08 PM #1441I asked if the cross joint in the propeller has damage and they reply no because they check it when pulled
down the propeller to remove the pinion's bearing. I also asked how did they measure the clearance between
the pinion and ring gear? They said they used a filler gauge. Maybe, they might have set the backlash
incorrectly? Or there were minor wears already? I red that one of the critical measurements that must
be made is setting the backlash. What is backlash? When I turn the pinion on the differential it will
turn a specific amount of space before it actually contacts the the ring gear to turn the axles. If I have
too little backlash the pinion is jammed into the ring gear and this will produce a lot of friction and heat
and will lock up the rear axle. It will not turn freely. If I have too much backlash the pinion and ring
gear will be too far apart and this will allow the gears not to mess properly and with the force of the motor,
it will chip and destroy the teeth of the gears. This will cause excessive whining and will eventually destroy
the axle. Maybe the gears have this damages already?
I called up Suzuki parts today and inquire about the rear differential carrier sub assembly ( bungo yata
sa tagalog ) and it cost 125,921.00 Php ! They say, the carrier assembly is hard to fix because the gears
inside has specific clearances. If I buy the part they will just install it to the differential housing and it
already includes the pinion and ring gear. The question now is, how accurate can they set the clearance
between the pinion and ring gear?
Anyway, I will just keep on using the apv and hopes it does not get worse. Thank you.

December 5th, 2012 10:03 PM #1443* Keno, sir baka meron sa salvage yard..hehe. Backlash, in tagalog salyada.. It wont cause much vibrations but yeah gears will get damaged later if not within correct specs. Noise and sound troubleshooting can sometimes be a biatch, that isolation by elimination method is the only solution.
IIRC, youre AT pan had a damage/dent, its also probable that the propeller was damaged causing sound/vibration/oscillation on a certain speed.
Try also the runout procedure maybe some shop is offering the service similar to this..
Or if it wont cause you toomuch worries and you could tolerate the noise, just ignore it..hehe

December 7th, 2012 08:51 PM #1447Thank you 12vdc, I will try to ask around if this rear differential gear assembly is available in the salvage
yard or as a surplus parts but I know it won't be easy to find one. Suzuki parts also have to order this
carrier sub assembly in Japan and will take about 45 days according to them. Price is 125,921.00 Php !
The shop told me to bring the apv back to them after one month to check if they need to re-adjust
the pinion and ring gear. I feel that the shop may have adjusted the pinion and ring gear a little tight?
It's hard to find an auto repair shop or machine shop that specialize in fixing the differential or propeller
shaft here. The auto shop here can replace all the bearings in the differential assembly but I am not
sure they have the instrument and experience to accurately return it to specs.
Since I use the apv everyday to take the kids to school and only run four kilometers a day with
speed below 40 kph. The noise or sound is hardly noticed.
I red this in the web and I think this might be the problem in my apv's differential.

" It was a high pitched whine foot on the accelerator, no noise foot off, dealer put new gear and bearings in diff. problem solved. "

If this is the problem, the pinion and ring gear can be ordered at Suzuki parts and will cost about
37,382.00 Php. They say it would take three days to order the parts.
Anyway, I am still observing the sound and just enjoy driving the apv at the moment.
Happy weekend to everybody, thank you.
