what connects between the two rear wheels is the dead axle. it does not help to propel the car, it is just there for wheel geometry and as a means to connect the other suspension components to the chassis. the other component connected between the body of the car and the axle is the anti sway bar. it is there to prevent your car from dancing and swaying after a turn or after hitting uneven surface of the road

Look under a Montero Sport and you will see the same thing. Only difference is the Montero has a rear differential (aka 'bungo') because it has rear wheel drive.

This type of suspension is inexpensive to produce and maintain. Also allows for a bigger trunk room than if you had a fully independent control arm set up back there.

Sentras use a similar type of suspension but with some detail variations.
