Norman Black to Talk
on another note..MANILA, Philippines—Norman Black is set to make a return to the Philippine Basketball Association as a coaching rigodon is expected to be formalized this month involving teams bankrolled by business tycoon-sportsman Manny V. Pangilinan.
The arrangement will include coach Chot Reyes moving over to the Smart Gilas national team from Talk ‘N Text in the PBA.
But there’s a catch.
A source privy to the details of the arrangement told the Inquirer that even after the deal is made official, it will only be put in motion after the 2012 UAAP season.
Black will move to the Talk ‘N Text camp while Reyes will replace Serbian Rajko Toroman, who was offered the consultant’s post at Smart Gilas after serving as its head coach.
Black was supposed to assume the Talk ‘N Text post after leading the Blue Eagles to a school record fourth straight UAAP crown.
But the school, the source said, asked that the move be deferred because there was too little time to find a replacement for Black as the Eagles shoot for a fifth consecutive crown.
Black made the Blue Eagles the first team in the past decade to string up four straight UAAP titles and only the fourth school to achieve that string of triumphs.
A former import who turned into a Grand Slam PBA mentor for San Miguel, Black also owns a remarkable 95-25 win-loss record in seven seasons in the UAAP.
The multititled Reyes, who steered Talk ‘N Text to back-to-back titles in the last PBA season, served as one of Toroman’s assistants in the Smart Gilas five.
Toroman, who was hired in 2009 after leading Iran to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, was tasked to spearhead the country’s bid for qualification in the 2012 London Olympics.
Smart Gilas fell short in the qualifying event for London, losing to Jordan in the semifinals and bowing to South Korea in the battle for the bronze medal of the recent Fiba Asia men’s championship.
Philippine Patriots hire Billy Ray Bates as skills coach | InterAKTV
The Black Superman is back in Philippine basketball.
Billy Ray Bates has signed a deal to become part of the coaching staff of the Philippine Patriots in the ASEAN Basketball League, his manager Sheryl Reyes said on Sunday.
“He will start working with the Patriots as a skills coach beginning October 15,” Reyes told InterAKTV in a telephone interview. “We signed the contract on Friday.”
Patriots team manager confirmed the news and added that the deal is for one season.
“Yes, he already signed, but there are certain things that needs to be finalized on Monday,” said Arejola.
Bates came back to the country more than a week ago for his induction into the PBA Hall of Fame.
Downward spiral
One of the best imports to ever play the game, Bates ended up in the PBA after washing out of the NBA because of drug- and alcohol-related issues. He quickly found success in the Philippines, helping Crispa win the league’s second Grand Slam in 1983.
Bates’ success continued with Ginebra, which he led to the franchise’s first championship in 1986. But his wild ways soon caught up with him, as he found himself getting cut from the PBA in 1988 after subpar performances.
It has been downhill for Bates since his PBA stint. He spent several years in prison last decade after being convicted of assault, and was reportedly working as a janitor in the United States before coming to Manila.
Chance at redemption
Bates has been planning to come back to the Philippines for the longest time, hoping that old friends and fans who still remember his days as the PBA’s “Black Superman” would give him more gainful employment.
The Patriots, who won the inaugural season of the ABL before succumbing to the Chang Thailand Slammers last year, is looking to make a splash with the entry of another Philippine-based team, San Miguel Beer, into the league. The team, it would seem, considers the legendary Bates a marquee name.
Curiously, San Miguel will also be coached by another Hall of Fame PBA import, Bobby Parks.
TV analyst?
But Bates isn’t just looking at a coaching job. According to Reyes, the former import is also looking at getting into television.
“He’s interested to become a sports commentator for PBA,” said Reyes. “He has great knowledge analyzing the game.”
At least one former import and television analyst thinks Bates would do a good job.
“Yes, he is qualified,” said Norman Black, a fellow Hall of Fame import who had several classic battles with Bates in the 1980s. “His presence might give color and added excitement to the coverage and the PBA in general.”
Let's just hope he doesn't mess up this 2nd chance at PBA!
Fasten your seatbelt! Or else...Driven To Thrill!
Looking forward to Paul Lee this season. He's good talaga. But my team for this season would be Ginebra or Alaska.
eh most of the fil-ams naman, pag nawala na sa pba, totally wala nang career talaga. unlike si alex compton, asst. coach siya ng isang team, & most of the time, nagiging panel pa ng pba telecast.
just like yung si seigle. asan na ba? yung si danny s., baka sumunod na rin.
kaya yung iba no choice. balik ulit sila sa US. di na sila celebrity back home.....![]()
