SMB acquires Adducul, Lordy in 3-team trade: Story from ABS-CBN...

San Miguel Beer made drastic moves on Thursday, engaging itself in a three-team trade with Red Bull and Barangay Ginebra and came out as the biggest winner after acquiring Romel Adducul and Lordy Tugade.

After seeing their campaign on a dwindling motion, the Beermen made themselves instant contenders in the Talk ’N Text-Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup after adding a dependable big man in Adducul and a reliable shooter in Tugade.

"Romel was very happy about the trade because he knows the system of coach Chot [Reyes] already with the national team and he’ll finally get the minutes he wanted," said Adducul’s agent Ed Ponceja.

Tugade and Adducul started to practice with their new team Thursday night and it is still uncertain if the two will play against Alaska today at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

Reyes said that he is not yet sure if Adducul, who will wear No. 88 according to Ponceja, as his favorite No. 10 belongs to the injured Danny Ildefonso, and Tugade will be given long minutes in their debut as Beermen.

The deal started when San Miguel dealt its first and second round picks in the 2007 draft plus Paolo Hubalde to the Bulls in exchange for Lordy Tugade and Omanzie Rodriguez.

Red Bull then traded Hubalde and its 2008 first round pick to Ginebra for Adducul who was immediately sent to the Beermen for the services of Migs Noble, Mark Kong and the latter’s 2008 second round pick.

Adducul’s entry to the Beermen gives Reyes enough body inside the shaded area, as Dorian Peña is the lone post-up threat for the team with Ildefonso is still recuperating from a foot injury and will be back next month.

Tugade, one of the six original players elevated by Red Bull when it entered the league in 2000, could play a solid back-up for Dondon Hontiveros at the small forward spot or start as a shooting guard for the team.

They will be tested today as the re-loaded San Miguel meets the Mike Cortez-less Alaska squad in the main game of the All-Filipino tournament 7:20 p.m.

The Beermen is the remaining team that has yet to post a win while the Aces (1-3) are struggling this early after being billed as one of the top favorites in the tournament. In the first game, Talk ’N Text (3-1) and the resurging Coca-Cola (2-2) collide at 4:35 p.m.

Cortez has been declared out of the conference due to an ACL injury in his left knee and will need at least six months to recover and will need surgery, according to Alaska team manager Joaqui Trillo.

Masaya na si Adducul nyan. Palagay ko magagamit na siya, at di na lang laging pamalit ang role niya sa SMB.

Dapat kasi baguhin ni Adducul ang playing style niya. Pag-aralan niya ng konti yung lumaro sa labas sa shaded lane kahit yung medium range shot lang at hindi yung puro post-up plays lang. Mas marami pa kasing mas malalaki sa kaniya, kaya minsan di siya effective sa laro niya.

Another Red Bull source, though, said that Tugade had been “acting up” since renewing his pact with the team a few weeks before the start of the season.

“He was showing the team that his heart was no longer here,” said the source, who requested anonymity, in Filipino. “The last straw as to why management and the coaching staff let him go was a knee injury he supposedly has, which team doctors said was nothing.”
