Hatfield Back to Play Again
RUDY Hatfield, the quintessential all-around player, is in town. But whether he is super fit to play right away for Ginebra in the 2006 Philippine Cup remains to be seen.
Newly installed Gin Kings coach Jong Uichico said the hard-working forward was due to arrive late last night or early this morning from the United States, intent on resuming a splendid PBA career halted when the league went down hard on Fil-foreigners. Hatfield, the former Coca-Cola star and perennial All-Star member, has been away from the league for two years when the PBA executed an iron-fisted stand on Fil-Ams and ordered them to go through updating their citizenship documents.
Hatfield, along with Eric Menk and Raffy Reavies, failed to meet the requirements and were indefinitely suspended from play. However, the league went soft and granted a controversial amnesty on the players, a resolution now being enjoyed by Menk and Reavies. Now Hatfield has the chance to team up with Menk and Reavies in a team not only very popular but also has all the ingredients to be a champion.
Uichico, however, is uncertain if Hatfield is still the same player the league knows from two years back. The former San Miguel coach realizes that Hatfield has not been through competitive basketball since he was suspended, and said that the best thing to do right now is include him only in the team’s line-up for pre-season games.
“Let’s see how fit he is,” said Uichico. “We’re not rushing things right now. But he’ll definitely be a big plus for the team if he’s ready to play. It’s his fire and intensity that we want.”
Unable to advance past the semifinals in the two conferences of the 2005-2006 season because of injuries to key men, Ginebra’s already favorite tag will further gain strength once Hatfield gets into tip-top shape and starts for the Gin Kings.
He is a demon both on offense and defense, and his playing attitude suits well for the Gin Kings, who also snatched Billy Mamaril from Coca-Cola during an off-season, controversial three-team trade.
Although Ginebra right now is a team regarded as an ‘overkill’ collection of stars, Uichico said that it is better that way than having a team lacking in manpower. “Mas maganda na yung sobra ang tao kesa sa kulang,” said Uichico. “It’s the flexibility that counts.”

Si Papa Rudy babalik na pala.......let's see kung dating Rudy H. pa rin ang makikita natin. Baka lumobo na siya. No competitive basketball for 2 years?

looks like there's light at the end of the tunnel for the rp teamNew deal with FIBA paves way for RP to play at Asiad

SAITAMA, Japan -- A deal between rival basketball factions and world governing body FIBA approved here could result in the Philippines fielding a team at the Asian Games, FIBA officials said Tuesday.
Patrick Baumann, secretary general of the global basketball governing body, and incoming president Bob Elphinston of Australia said they hoped the move would lead to the currently suspended Filipino federation being active in time for the December event at Doha, Qatar.
The plan, Baumann said, would create a new governing body from the Philippines by the end of September, which would be reinstated and allowed to send a squad to compete against the region's other top squads.
"If they are able to deliver what they promised, the Philippines are expecting to have their best players at the Asian Games in December in Doha," Elphinston said. "That will be the first test."![]()

Hatfield back to boost Ginebra cast
Rudy Hatfield is back in town.
Hatfield arrived from Michigan Monday night, made a courtesy call on the San Miguel Corp. top bosses yesterday and is set to join the Barangay Ginebra Kings in practice at the Greenmeadow Gym this morning.
The 6-foo-3 Fil-Am player is to play serious ball for the first time since leaving the country last year in frustration over the status of his citizenship case.
"Obviously, he has gained weight," said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico of Hatfield who briefly watched the Kings’ practice after his visit to the SMC office yesterday.
"His body bulked up maybe because of more weights (exercises) and less running," Uichico added. "For sure, he’ll feel his way around first. But we’ll see."
Ginebra team manager Allan Caidic said they’ve yet to reach an agreement about a playing contract but Hatfield is already lined up for the PBA pre-season tourney starting Friday.
The Kings start their campaign in the pre-season against the Purefoods Chunkee Giants at 6 p.m. Saturday at the San Sebastian College-Cavite gym.
Hatfield landed at Ginebra as part of the three-way trade deal among Ginebra, Coke and Air21 that also involved other players in Billy Mamaril, Rafi Reavis, Kalani Ferreira, Manny Ramos, Ervin Sotto, Aris Dimaunahan and Ryan Bernardo.
It would be recalled the Hatfield abandoned Coca-Cola last year despite the impending lifting of his suspension in the league.
He reportedly tried his hand in wrestling and enrolled in a fireman’s course.
Lomobo pala si Hatfield baka hindi na makatakbo. PG na lang kulang sa Gins.
