    Japeth faces lifetime ban

MANILA, Philippines - Japeth Aguilar, the PBA top draftee, has decided to join the Smart Gilas team, foregoing his stint with Burger King despite threat of a lifetime ban from the pro league.

“He’s made a decision. He’ll not sign up with Burger King. He’ll play for the country,” said veteran newsman Ronnie Nathanielsz, representing the 6-foot-9 cager as agent.

“They (Burger King officials) said they would move for Japeth to be banned from the league but Japeth and his father said bahala na sila (let them be),’” Nathanielsz added.

Nathanielsz told The STAR that the Tianjin FIBA-Asia experience was an eye-opener for the prized rookie on his role on the future RP team which prompted him to offer his services to Smart Gilas.

Nathanielsz also said Aguilar has nothing against coach Yeng Guiao or the limited minutes he played in the Tianjin joust.

“He saw in Tianjin that he’ll be needed by Smart Gilas. He just wants to help the country,” said Nathanielsz.

The veteran newsman, a PBA long-timer, believes there’s no provision in the PBA by-laws that would close the door on Aguilar when he decides to rejoin the league.

Burger King top official Lito Alvarez, however, said the PBA board will impose severe sanction on the player.

“They’re making a mockery of a 35-year-old organization. I will not take this sitting down and I don’t think the PBA board will let it pass,” said Alvarez, the current PBA chair.

“He shouldn’t have joined the draft in the first place if he wants to play for Smart Gilas. Now that he joined the draft, he’s bound to comply with the rules,” Alvarez said. “I have offered Japeth a three-year maximum contract for a PBA rookie.”

Nathanielsz informed Alvarez of their plan as early as Wednesday. Alvarez, in turn, advised Nathanielsz to first consult with the parents of the player and with the league commissioner..

The BK top honcho thinks the player was ill advised on his decision not to turn pro.

“They’ll get to enjoy the best of both worlds in my offer since I’m giving him the maximum contract for three years and I’m allowing him to play for Smart Gilas on the side,” said Alvarez.

part owner naman si MVP sa BK eh, so maaayos din yan, I think it's the right decision forAguilar, walang mangyayari sa kanya sa PBA. instead na mag imporve yan, magiging stagnant lang ang game niya sa PBA.

play for the country under a foreign coach then take advantage of all the international exposure, after 3 years super galing na siya and buy out na ni MVP yun rights niya sa BK. problem solve.

    very very wise decision!

i think it's not the question kung san sya mas gagaling or what.. the fact is he applied for the draft.. so he should be accountable for that.. lalo na naging #1 pick sya.. eh di dapat iba na lang kinuha nang BK kung don pala sya sa Smart maglalaro.. take ko dyan eh.. pera pera lang yan.. mababa kasi ang maximum pay nang rookie sa PBA.. so baka na offer-an nang mas malaki yan don sa national team.

but it doesn't mean na porke na na draft ka eh kailagan mo ng mag sign up...right?it only gave the team the first crack to sign up the player, the player can always refuse the offered contract.

Ang alam ko, iba naman kasi sa NBA, parang technically, a team could draft you there even if you did not apply for the draft, yung mga undergraduate na College players lang will "announce" their availability for the draft. For example, yung mga international players, pag me nakitang magaling yung mga NBA team, talagang gagamitin nila yung draft rights nila for that player, and that would mean that if ever that player wants to play in the NBA, the team who already drafted him has the rights over him. Kung ayaw naman nya maglaro, eh di sige lang, nasayang lang yung draft pick nung team. kaya yung ibang internationals, sa 2nd or 3rd round na nada draft sa NBA, unless me prior arrangement sila, kasi, "rights" to a player ang nakukuha ng team.

Iba naman sa PBA, konti lang teams, konti rin ang angat na talents sa draft, so a player needs to apply for the draft bago sya maisama sa draft pool. Di naman puede na ayawan nung player yung team na nag draft sa kanya, kasi, that team already has the rights over him. Puede nya i request na mai trade sya, but he can't say na "I'm not playing for you BK, I want to play for San Miguel only".

If I recall correctly, nangyari na yan ke Marlou Aquino dati, ayaw nya maglaro sa Ginebra nung umpisa.

nope! I still believe the drafted players still has rights if they want to accept any contract offered. drafting a player is just giving the team a right to sign him, but if player will not sign the contract karapatan niya yun.

Yes, I agree, the player has a right not to sign any contract offered him. But he has to sit down at least a year (maybe 2 or 3), then he becomes a free agent. Or, he could ask for just a one year contract.

hehe, malamang! Then, nung tinanong si Ronnie, sagot nya, "..mas gusto daw ni Japeth to play for flag & country pala", ahehehehe, binobola ata tayo.

it's out.. SMART GILAS offered him 18.6M for 3 years to play for the national team compared to the 8M maximum pay he could get as a rookie.

it's not like he wants to play for another PBA team, yun ang hinde pwede, pwede siya maglaro sa SMart gilas since Smart gilas is not a PBA team

kaya pala... mas nakakasilaw nga ang offer ng smart gilas kesa sa pba. kahit na dinadahilan nya eh gusto nyang maglaro for the flag and country.

by joining the draft, he submitted himself to the rules of the PBA.. so kung ayaw nya sa BK, he can ask to be traded... or sit out the year (or 2nd year), but still, he is PBA "property"... sumali sya sa draft eh...

i read somewhere na sa press release din sa mga pahayagan, even before the deadline for application for the draft... somebody was advising him na sa Smart Gilas na muna at huwag na muna mag apply for PBA draft.. and yet he did...

tapos ngayon sasabihin nya na gusto nya sa Smart Gilas? granted that the trial period na naranasan nya was the FIBA Asia (which was run by the PBA) and he didn't like what he saw.. huli na ang lahat.. nagpadraft na sya eh...

well, unfortunately japeth had a history of reneging on a big commitment before. too bad the people around him dish out myopic advices w/c aren't exactly great for the long haul.

the upside to this is if ever he sticks to his guns, he'd be advancing his skills further under the wings of an experienced basketball internationalist in the person of toroman. and as everyone now knows, not only will this be beneficial to aguilar alone, but also to our country as well
