During the sars epidemic in 2003 i was the one who proposed to our company to install UVc lamps in our airconditioning system. We tried it first on our rig. We installed UVc lamps before and after the air handling unit evaporator coils of our AC system. Not that anyone on the rig got sars (from riding on airplanes) but in just a week nobody on the rig got cough and colds anymore. Whilst before if one got on board with a cough or cold then it starts to spread around. After that transmission was cut to almost none. One downside is of course the smell of ozone but we were able to remedy that by increasing the make up air setting on the ahu.
UVc does work. Get the one with timer so it turns on after you leave the room. Also make sure all in your house are aware when the lamp is on so nobody accidentally enters the room.
