^ Beyond miniaturization, the higher the frequency, the higher the available bandwidth, the more subscribers you can cram for a given facility (ie. Cell site).
Anything between 300MHz to 300GHz is microwave. That includes most consumer devices that uses RF to communicate; RC toys, WiFi, Bluetooth, mobile devices (GSM/LTE/4G), 2-way radios, wirelss microphones, wireless phones, navigation equipment (GPS/GLONASS), Radar, satellite and terrestrial communications, et al.
So 24x7, we're constantly blanketed by microwave energy. But unless you live accross a radar antenna facility, the radiations are relatively weak and safe. The amount of RF your mobile phone makes is technically a drop in the ocean.
