iOS 6 vs. Android 4.1: How Apple's Newest Features Compare to Android - AndroidPIT

iOS 6 vs. Android 4.1: How Apple's Newest Features Compare to Android
by Steven Blum 9/21/12 6:10 PM

iOS 6 is officially available to download as of yesterday. The latest version of Apple's mobile OS is said to offer more than 200 new features. Since, in addition to my Android, I also own an iPod Touch (fourth-generation), I decided to install the latest iOS version and compare its newest features directly to their Android 4.1 equivalents. Here's what I found!

    Apple Maps vs. Google Maps

Much ado has been made about the inaccuracy of Apple's new maps service. It is indeed a disaster, plagued by navigation issues, inaccurate information and a bevy of apocalpytic 3D graphics. But, on the bright side, Apple now finally offers the turn-by-turn navigation Android has been offering for over a year.

In our tests, we preferred the look of Google Maps for Android, hands-down. Not only do the maps show more information, but the navigation was on a street-level, not from a birds-eye-view – much more helpful if you're lost. Even worse (of course): Apple gave us the wrong directions to a popular Berlin landmark, Alexanderplatz. In reality, the entrance to the soaring tower is on the other side of the street.

As far as 3D-mapping is concerned, Apple has created some impressively three-dimensional areas of the city, but by no means is every block available in 3D and even famous landmarks look really bad. In conclusion, Apple needs to update Maps with user-input ASAP! For now, it's no question: Android is the clear winner in every regard.

    Facebook Integration:

One of the features Apple is touting in their new iOS is complete integration with Facebook. Of course, Android owners probably wouldn't get too excited about that. We've been able to share anything on any network ever since Android 2.0. But it's a nice addition, and the way the Facebook icon pops up when you want to share is quite cute. Otherwise, there really isn't anything to see over here.

It must be noted as well that Android owners can also share photos and just about anything on not just Facebook but also Twitter, Dropbox, Bluetooth, Picaso, Skype and hundreds of other apps.

Apple does have one leg up, since they allow users to sync their Facebook contacts with their address book. Android 4.1 only offers a roundabout way of doing it; you need to download a 3rd party app to synchronize your Facebook account with your Android.

App Store vs. Google Play Store:

At long last, Apple has updated the look of their App Store. The refresh was sorely needed, in my opinion, as the old store wasn't so visually appealing.

The new design brings a much more aesthetically-exciting look but navigating around is actually harder. Maybe it's because the icons are too big now, but it looks like not everything fits into the screen. In fact, the icons on the far right are almost always cut-off. Graphically, it's quite pretty, but you can't help but feel that some space is being wasted.

Of course, the Google Play store is far from perfect. The apps don't look as shiny and appealing, for one, and there aren't any beautiful headers of which to speak, but at least everything fits on the screen.

    Passbook:

The idea behind Passbook is both simple and ingenious: an app that can organize movie and concert tickets, vouchers and coupons. To redeem, you can simply have someone scan your device. But that's not all: Passbook will even scan your location and open your ticket automatically when you unlock the screen; helpful if you're already distracted and trying to get to your flight. Passbook will even notify you of gate changes.

In other words, this is a damn cool service. There's really nothing this comprehensive in Android land.

    Do Not Disturb

Another simple yet ingenious new iOS 6 feature is Apple's "Do Not Disturb." This allows you to set quiet times for your iPhone when no one should be able to disturb you. However, you can still make it possible for friends and loved ones to call you anyway, or even set the app so that if someone calls multiple times in a row, the call will go through (in case of emergancies).

Stock Android 4.1 doesn't offer this feature, but certain ROMS like Cyanogen Mod offers something similar. Even if you don't root your Android, you can find a number of apps that allow you to create designated quiet times for your phone.

Conclusion: The More Things Change, The More They Stay the SameApple would like you to believe they've made over 200 changes to iOS in the latest update. In reality, the number of updates you'll actually notice is quite small. Although many of these changes were badly needed, they don't go above and beyond anyone's reasonable expectations. iOS has evolved a bit, but the evolution is too slow; the homescreen still looks the way it does five years ago, there still aren't any widgets and notifications aren't interactive like they are in Android. The only real innovation Apple has brought to the table seems to be Passbook – and you still can't use it with NFC because the iPhone doesn't even have that yet. In conclusion, Apple has barely innovated, and where they have innovated, sometimes they haven't done such a great job. At this point, it just looks like they're playing catch-up.

    Main disadvantages
•No offline maps support and maps are not up to scratch currently

•Passbook not on par with Google Wallet, not truly useful
•An altogether conservative approach to design and layout
•Notification Center could've offered more functionality
    •No widgets
    •Underused lockscreen
    •Limited themes and personalization options

it's not surprising. with the tighter release dates of android the iOS is now playing catchup. they are falling in the RIM trap. RIM was the top player in smartphones 5 years ago but they were only putting out small incremental updates on their blackberries (just like what apple is doing now) then ios and android came in and blew them out of the water. apple doesn't really invent or innovate much in the first place. they **improve** what's already out there and put their spin doctors to work and tag that improvement as "revolutionary". sheeple then eat that sh!t up.

Dami OS din nag fail or naging obsolete. Symbian, Window Mobile OS and Palm WebOS were the top OS in 2007, saan na sila ngayon?

After Maps, Wi-Fi issue hounds Apple's iOS 6
    September 30, 2012 9:41am

Still reeling from criticisms over its glitch-ridden Maps app, Apple Inc.'s newest operating system for mobile devices is hounded by a new problem: Wi-Fi connectivity.

The problem was immediately felt by owners of the iPhone 5 where iOS 6 comes pre-installed, tech site CNET reported Sunday (Manila time).

"The fallout is numerous forum discussions on Wi-Fi connectivity problems. For example, there are currently two major Wi-Fi threads (at least) in the Apple Support Communities," CNET's Brooke Crothers said.

Others who may run into the Wi-Fi problem include users of iPhones and iPads who upgraded their operating systems to iOS 6.

CNET cited reports saying 60 percent of iPhone and about 40 percent of iPad owners have been upgrading to the new OS so far.

Crothers said even he was affected, as his iPhone 5 and Retina iPad do not work on some Wi-Fi networks.

"The only way I could quickly get my iPhone 5 and Retina iPad working on a Netgear Wi-Fi router was to downgrade the firmware. That worked but seemed like an odd solution," he said.

Other Wi-Fi mentioned in discussion forums included "persistently slow" Wi-Fi speeds, he added.

So far, CNET's Crothers said Apple has officially kept mum on the issue.

"Looks like Apple has its damage-control work cut out for it," Crothers wrote. — LBG, GMA News

And another bug... a purple one at that.

Apple Acknowledges iPhone 5 Camera Problem, Says You’re Holding It Wrong
    Jesus Diaz

After initially denying it, Apple has acknowledged the iPhone 5's purple flare camera problem in an email to a Gizmodo reader. Their solution: "Angle the camera away from the bright light source when taking pictures."
    Here's their complete answer:

    Dear Matt,

Our engineering team just gave me this information and we recommend that you angle the camera away from the bright light source when taking pictures. The purple flare in the image provided is considered normal behavior for iPhone 5's camera. If you wish to reach me regarding this case number *********, please contact me at 1-877-***-**** ext. *******. I currently work Thursday-Monday: 7:00am - 3:30pm Mountain Time. If you reach my voicemail, please leave your name, phone number, case number and the best time to reach you. Email is ************apple.com.

    Sincerely,
    Debby
    AppleCare Support

Long time Gizmodo reader Matt Van Gastel received this email after a long call with Apple support regarding the Purple Flare problem in his phone, which apparently is a feature common to every iPhone 5:

Initially I was told that it shouldn't happen and that it is strange. My call was escalated to a senior support individual who again said it was odd and shouldn't happen. I sent her some pics of the issue and she in turn sent them to the engineering team.

Her final response is what you can see at the top of this article. Some photography experts have speculated that the purple flare is a product of the sapphire glass covering the iPhone 5's camera. Others seem to think its chromatic aberration – a type of optical distortion that occurs when the lens fails to capture all colors to the same convergence point. Still there are some that dismiss this as the culprit and instead suggest it’s a limitation / defect with the camera’s sensor or the lens.

The issue in question is a purple color that typically shows up on the edges of photos when a light source is immediately nearby, though can occur even when the light is off frame. It can also affect both photos and videos.

So it is final, folks: Apple says that, if your photos have a purple flare, this is totally normal behavior of the iPhone 5's camera. You are just holding it wrong.

Also, it's not Apple's fault that the Sun is purple.

No wonder the church of Apple is worried. Cheap is eating into their numbers... With the last IPad already nearing a year ago, people are waiting for the next "big thing", which maybe the "IPad mini"...

It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that more Americans than ever now own tablets, but if you'd ever wanted some quantifiable data to go along with that homespun wisdom, then the Pew Research Center is glad to help. According to its latest report, 22 percent of US adults now own a tablet of some form. While the iPad remains the dominant player in the space with a 52 percent market share, this figure starkly contrasts the 81 percent share that Pew reported in 2011. As you might expect, Android tablets have made significant inroads and now account for 48 percent of the overall tablet space. Leading the Android charge is the Kindle Fire, which alone accounts for 21 percent of all tablets sold. It's worth pointing out that Pew's survey was conducted before the release of either the Nexus 7 or the Kindle Fire HD, which means that even the most recent information is a bit behind the curve. You'll find a press release after the break that provides a much broader take on Pew's latest findings in the mobile space, but those who want to go straight to the meat should hit up the source link below.

because they're slipping and playing catchup now. except for the passbook all the features the iphone5 has now has been released in android phones already.

you know what their response to the purple bug? you're not taking photos properly. dont take pictures with the light source in the frame. wtf is that? it's the same response for the antenna issue - you're holding it the wrong way. fsck that.
