havent used that model yet pero i found the xperia line to be lacking in comparison to its samsung, htc, motorola counterparts. their dev and design team needs to mature more before i can be persuaded to buy one of their phones. pero in fairness their phones feel pretty solid in your hands.

    Iphone and local LTE...

With the new iPhone 5 expected to be launched in just a few hours, the rumor mill has kicked into its highest gear as expectant fans and industry pundits await the unveiling of Apple’s latest smartphone.

But for Filipino spectators, possibly the biggest questions that hound their mind is the local availability of the new iPhone, as well as local support for LTE connectivity.

If you’ll recall, Wall Street Journal earlier reported that the iPhone 5 will support “Global LTE,” and with local telecom players battling it out with their respective LTE offers, we got to asking: will the iPhone 5′s LTE work in the Philippines?

According to a telco executive interviewed by InterAksyon.com, it will. The executive said the iPhone 5 will work on the 1800 MHz frequency, which both Smart Communications and Globe Telecom support on their respective LTE services.

Unlike earlier mobile network technologies, early-stage LTE works only on specified network spectrums — in Smart’s case it’s the 2100 MHz & 1800 MHz, and in Globe’s case it’s also on the 1800 MHz.

Launched in late August, Smart announced that its LTE network will be operating on the 2100 MHz band, a frequency that did not support earlier Apple devices, specifically the new iPad with LTE connectivity.

A few weeks later, Smart decided to launch another frequency for its LTE network, on 1800 MHz, making it the first multi-band LTE service provider in the Philippines.

Smart presumably made the move to support the upcoming iPhone launch, since it’s working hard to support Apple devices since being allowed to carry them last year, with the iPhone 4S.

Globe’s LTE service, meanwhile, has yet to be commercially launched, but early marketing materials said the service will cost P1,799 for 28 Mbps, and P2,499 for 42 Mbps.

Smart’s LTE offer, on the other hand, is available for P3,500 with a 10GB data cap.

Smart executives also said they are “working” to have the Philippines as one of the debut countries for the next iPhone. Apple will unveil its latest smartphone on September 13, 2:00 am (Manila time).

Basta 1800mhz yung LTE network, pwede...

If you intend to buy the new iPhone 5 with 4G support. It is important to know that the Singapore LTE network is a dual band network supporting 1800MHz and 2600MHz. Unfortunately, the new iPhone 5 supports only the 1800MHz band, generally great for indoors.

As for Hong Kong, only SmarTone supports the 1800MHz band. The iPhone 5 will be compatible with SmarTone network. The rest of the operators do not support the 1800MHz band yet.

Here is a list of network the mode A1429 iPhone 5 will work on

    Germany
    -Deutsche Telekom

    United Kingdom
    -Everything Everywhere
    ◦Orange
    ◦T-Mobile

    Australia

    Japan
    Softbank

    Korea
    ◦SK Telecom
    ◦KT

smart and globe will use 2100 and 2600 MHz respectively for their LTE. ip5 does not support entire 1800 MHz. supported bands are 1, 3 and 5

GTA Vice City Android game installs malware
    September 14, 2012 1:02pm

Android gamers, watch out: a supposed unofficial variant of the "Grand Theft Auto" (GTA) for Android may be a malware in disguise, especially if it asks you to install a Flash update.

Security vendor GFI Labs said the supposed Flash update is a variant of the Boxer malware, which sends SMS messages to premium numbers and drains the user's load.

"What we have here is Boxer, and anyone installing this will find they have premium rate SMS messages being sent out to look forward to," it said.

Also, GFI noted the only games Rockstar had released on the official Google Play site are versions of GTA 3 and the original Max Payne.

There is no version of Vice City currently available from the publishers, much less a version authored by someone called “Vickie” on a Russian download site, it said.

GFI said downloading and installing the .apk from 1mobile.com/gta-vice-city-507346.html will give the end-user a Vice City icon on their dash.

But the user will get another message appears telling him or her that “Flash Player is required” and gives a link to a fake Flash player.

GFI also noted there is also a similar file on the download site which claims to be a “Z.O.N.A. racing” game, where users may also end up with the same Boxer malware.

"Files asking the user to download a fake Flash Player separately is a pretty nifty trick and one that a lot of phone owners could fall for," it noted.

GFI said its products will detect the original apps as: Trojan.AndroidOS.FakeInst, and the Boxer variant as: Trojan.AndroidOS.Boxer.d. — TJD, GMA News

There are worms and viruses for both Android and iOS. For the non-technologically inclined out there, you should be safe if you don't root or jailbreak.

Don't side-load apps from unknown sources. If you get your apps from Google Play or Apple's App Store, for Android and iOS, respectively, you should be fine.
