if you are getting affordable ones, do check the number of ram slots. Check the internet kung may online support siya or may reviews.

MSI S270 lang yung gamit ko ngayon. Medyo mababa na yung specs.

AMD Turion 64 (pdeng paltan ng processor!!!)
    512MB RAM
    40GB HDD
    ATI X200 shared
    Combo Drive

got an acer 5551 yesterday and i still don't have time to run it through its paces. specs that i recall would be core duo (1.6mhz ata), 512mb ram, dvdrw drive, wireless nic and bluetooth, almost 3kg weight. some observations though:

the speakers though make a tinny sound, liit lang kasi. hehehehe.

i noticed...it's frickin hot sa right portion ng palmrest nearest the user if you use it for a while. hmmm...makahanap nga ng laptop cooler.

i like the feel ng keyboard though. my classmate has an asus laptop and i noticed when i was typing on it na sumasabit yung fingers ko sa edges ng keys surrounding the one that i'm currently pressing on, nakakatakot at baka bigla na lang matanggal yung keycap. none of that feeling with the 5551. :D

hate the bios, nothing much to tinker with (hehehehe) pero i can't complain naman.

i like the screen, vibrant colors.

the dvdrw drive's a bit noisy though...di lang siguro ako sanay.

How's navigating around Windows? If it's like any of the other Core Duo laptops I've sampled, it should be very quick and responsive with little lag on anything.

wanted the core2 duo sana kaya lang my mom's gonna kill me na, i borrowed her bpi card kasi yun ang may installment although i'm still paying her naman. hehehe.

i'm currently running her on minimum battery settings, 3 hours ang max. i have yet to doublecheck if ilang cells yung battery, it could explain the battery life. at the moment, i'm using it as a glorified mp3 player when i take a dump () or shower since sa bahay, andun naman desktop for making my termpapers, i'll be making full use of this when i'm out of the house na.

as for navigating, it runs fast. my butt dyno (hahaha) feels it loads faster than my desktop running a p4-2.4 (overclocked to 2.7) with 768mb or ram...even though the desktop has less startup apps. :D

Dualcore does wonders for laptop/Windows responsiveness. It kicks the crap out of any singlecore laptop cpu and the difference is so noticable. If there's any good time to buy a laptop, now is the time. Even the Core Duo (not the faster Core2 Duo) laptops are very nice. They fall just short of my X2 4200+ desktop. I too was amazed at the Core Duo laptops I tried out.

Do you have a fast discrete graphics chip? If all you have is the built-in Intel graphics, good luck. It'll be a slideshow if it runs at all. But, most other apps should be ok.

For the notebook lovers. :)
