I was on the Cebu forum and ran across a post of a guy that built his house out of shipping containers, they are fairly cheap to buy used and I mean there is no shortage of these things in the world and in Subic and other places like Manila or Cebu were they are commonly off loaded.

A few good things I see about these is cost, 50T to 80T for a 40FT contianer not to shabby, Plus hurricane proof, fire proof, easy to make secure and can insulated to the point it's a virtual ice box. Plus you can stack them and they are not going anywere.

I found a couple of places that look like they already started but info is sketchy at best on there ads.

You can pretty much do whatever in the interior going with say Hadiflex cement board for the walls with 2" of insulation under it. It already has a nice flat surface to tile. All electrical stuff could be easily routed and anchored as well as the plumbing. Solid mounting surfaces for doors and windows, ect.

Only thing I'm not to keen on the outer ribbed surface. Would probably hadiflex that as well so it's smooth also insulation under that. I figure you can pretty much do anything to the interior or exterior will alot less labor. Biggest cost besides the container of course it trailer and crane to the build site. And you have to make sure it is pre-treated with some kind of corrosion inhibiting paint or primer.

    Any thoughts?

    A few pics.

This is a pretty slick design, beets a 5 million peso 40sqm manila condo in my book. Especially with the containers cost about 80T peso each.

Actually, shipping containers are being used as "beerhouses" in Evacom, Paranaque....

Actually... those things are safer than houses... they're built to withstand the weight of dozens of other containers (and their cargo) stacked on top of them.

Pier One uses them for their bars... they're used as construction site offices, police outposts... etcetera... but I've never seen them finished to such a high degree...

    Hmmm... Ideas... ideas...

No termite problems but if someone was to knock loudly on one of the metal walls, it might sound like Thor the god of thunder was at the door.

You got that right Niky, The old devil is thinking about making this a reality. I wish some good old Pinoy entrepreneurs can make this easy and affordable for all. Looks like a few are trying but apparently they don't want any business because they don't return emails or txt or answer there phones.!!! Never understood that, put up a ad then never reply.

I'm sure there's some hard working welders, and construction works that would not mind some extra work. Not to mention the low cost for people who are struggling, Surprised, ok not surprised the RP governement has not thought of this as a option for super low cost and safe housing.

This could definetly be a good thing for the Philippines to look into. Hopefully there be some functional businesses in place in the next few years.

This is a design I work with. Hopefully this thread gets some creative juices going and people start looking into making this a common thing.

There is another one used to be located at Shaw Blvd but same thing happened, it died out. Not enough customers visiting the place buying stuff.

I remember that place. I think it's near pure gold. It's only now that I realise that those were container vans pala! I used to buy my pambahay clothes there. Lots of over runs. Sobrang init nga lang yung mga shops na walang AC.

I think that the apartment/mini-hotel application would be good for budget resorts.

You should consider logistics if you have to transport those metal containers very far from where they are stored. It adds to the costs.

a truck to transport the van

then a forklift (or a crane) to lift the van and put it on its intended place

Leasing a forklift isnt cheap considering it would be used only once per container. (Assumed lifting the container from the truck and placing it on it's final location.)

Best to hire five to six trucks at a time to transport enough containers to keep the forklift busy.

    You'd be surprised.

Like I said, cargo containers are fairly strong.

Your regular residential construction, with cement flooring and structural columns reinforced with re-bar is much, much weaker than a cargo container, which is built to be stacked over a dozen high, with each container stacked on top of the bottom container carrying tons of goods. Those containers are built thick and very, very strong. Try to put the load-capacity of one cargo container on the second or third floor of a regular apartment building (not one built with steel frame-work, mind you, but the old-fashioned way) and the floor would likely buckle...

In fact, a four-storey apartment building made out of cargo containers should be nearly earthquake-proof.

The only problem is disguising it...

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
