Speaking of CPU coolers, the first aftermarket CPU cooler I ever bought in the early 2000's was a Thermaltake Volcano 11+. This was paired to an Athlon XP 1800+.

At max 3,400 RPM, it cools it just fine, even when slightly overclocked. But man... that Volcano 11+ is noisy as hell! Sold it a week later and reinstalled the stock cooler.

Learning from that mistake, I've since made deliberate efforts to make my future PC builds as silent as possible. That said, my current PC cooling go-to parts are:

    CPU coolers: Noctua
    Fans: Noctua or Arctic

I use a Noctua NH-U12P SE2 on my Xeon home media server and an NH-U14S on my Ryzen 5 main PC. Case cooling are either via Noctua P12 (flow-optimized) or Arctic P12 (static pressure optimized) fans. Everything is super silent, even at full load.

Never preferred liquid-cooling. IMO, it has one too many parts and a solution that creates more potential problems.

yeah cpu cooling and overclocking used to be fun. i used to have an athlon XP as well, could probably overclock 50% (i don't remember). back then you could get a celeron 300 to run at 450. celeron 600 to 900.

amd x2 555 Black Editions could be overclocked, and on top of that enable the two dormant cores to turn it into quad core

but now chips like this ryzen 5600G don't have any headroom left. i think you could only add around 100mhz so i won't bother. this is a lot less than i got when i first overclocked my amd K5, 100mhz to 117mhz

Yeah, they're very good as well.

I'm just team beige on this because of Noctua's great aftersales support which I have experienced first hand.

Noctua once sent me a new mounting kit for free (NM-A90) because I wanted to rotate my CPU cooler 90 degrees. This was way back 2014. I just sent them an email and they shipped the part to me at my PH address, no less. I believe they still continue to provide free mounting kit upgrades so you can reuse your Noctua coolers to support future CPU generations and the subsequent newer mounting configurations. I've probably transplanted my NH-U12P SE2 three times in the last 12 years.

Noctua fans (have only used the NF-P12 long-term) are also superb and over a decade later, running 24x7, are still silent, turns silky smooth... like they were new.

Can I ask what brand of mouse do you think is the most durable? I've been buying logitech bluetooth, and my last one logitech wireless, all lasted for average of 1 year, probably the longest is 2 years. Something about the sensor sa ilalim, nag i stutter na. Yung wireless naman scroll wheel will scroll back few lines, like 2 steps forward one step backward.

Can you recommend a good durable wireless mouse? I'm not looking for gaming mouse, just a reliable mouse for work.

Logitech M331 which is wireless and M337 which is bluetooth. I just had 1 M331 but it has a clunky scroll wheel now. M337 bluetooth has stuttering sensor at the bottom and this is my 5th M337, including the others I bought for my family.

Lagi ko problem is yung sensor sa ilalim nag stutter or hang after a year or 2.

Update; I used our strong vacuum cleaner (as opposed to desktop vacuum which I tried yesterday) to suck at the sensor and scroll wheel, both mouse are functioning well again.

It's been a long while since I experienced failure of the actual optical sensor. If it's not dirt or anything mechanically wrong with it, yung sensor na mismo ang problem. In which case, it's e-waste.

But kung skipping scroll wheel or double-clicking/intermittent buttons lang, I fix it myself. Dami sa online ng replacement rotary encoders and mouse button switches. Just get the correct one and choose the good kind... TTC or ALPS for the rotary encoder and Kailh for the switches, para tumagal.

Some Logitech mice use optical scroll wheel sensors (instead of encoders). They don't technically wear down, but my experience with them is that they sometimes get dirty (due to the grease from the wheel mechanism mixing with grime from your hands) and blocks some of the holes where the sensor beam goes through. This results in skipping and jumping when turning the wheel. I just wash it in joy to remove the dirt buildup.

Currently, I'm using a Logitech M585 and a couple of Rapoo M500 mice. All are wireless (w/ dongle) + multi-device BT capable.

What’s a cheap MacBook (what year?) nowadays for my son? He’s just in Grade 6 so just basic stuff like office, Google classroom, YouTube etc.

Thinking of buying this. Vertical mouse, although wala naman ako problem sa wrist but is it true na mas maganda sa posture ang vertical mouse?

Is vertical mouse claims real or just a scam? 20230901_153258.jpg20230901_153248.jpg

What's your budget? Are you willing to buy used? Btw, why choose a MacBook if the curricula is on Google classroom?

Yeah just a second hand one. Ah most of us at home are using Apple so easier to be in the same ecosystem, & airdrop is very convenient. Plus his previous laptop is a MacBook Air. Easier for him to use.

A used M1 Macbook Air is about 29k-35k these days. FB Marketplace is likely the cheapest place to find one (caveat emptor). Brand new old stock sealed M1 Macbook Airs (2020 usually) can be bought for about 36k to 40k these days, Greenhills is a good source but do haggle. Sa FB marketplace meron din yata but you will have to look around for trustworthy sources.

I would be willing to swing up to 31k for a used M1 Air as any price higher than that I would prefer to get the new old stock instead.

Intel Macbook Airs can be had for 15k to 25k depending on the year and condition. Macbook pros are heavier, as you know, so I don't prefer getting one for kids. The intel ones with the touch bar are probably going to be 21k at least.

If budget permits, I would recommend M1's over the Intel variants because these will likely get longer software updates. And the M1's are much much faster too, as you probably know.

Kung malaki kamay o palm mo, at for cad modelling, video edting, animation use, okay cya.
Kung small to mrdium size lang palm mo, and for ms office use, and browsing lang, get the MX Anywhere 3. Karamihan sa gumagamit ng vertical mouse in their work may second mouse yan na flat design, isang usb plug isang bluetooth.

For the posture, nasa computer chair yan. Yung may magandang back/ lumbar support, mahal nga lang nasa >10k mostly.

I guess I don't need it then, thanks.
