This has been bothering me a lot everytime I see an Asus Eee laptop on sale, di ba this laptop is flash diskbased? What will happen after 5 years when the battery for the flash dies? Will your OS and everything installed on it be erased? Kasi, forgive me tech people if im wrong, ang flash memory is the same as RAM but will not be erased coz meron etong battery to preserve the data (excluding the laptop's battery itself). Your inputs will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

That depends. Does the Eee PC use an SSD with flash memory (non-volatile) or dram (volatile* and similar to the ram in computers)? I thought most tiny SSD's used flash memory which hold their contents without need of a battery.

*volatile require a battery to ensure the contents doesn't get erased when the computer is turned off. Sort of like the RAM drives used by Commodore Amigas and early pc's with MS-DOS which lose their contents once the computer is turned off.

Also, I wouldn't defrag an SSD because first, it wouldn't need it. Second, writes to an SSD shortens the lifespan. A defrag does a tremendous amount of writes.

flash retains data even with power cut off, just like your memory cards like SD card, memory stick ,etc

I've had some trouble with touchpad sensitivity on the Eee, but it's in a place that's easier to reach than the Cloud's. One advantage of the Cloud is the ultra-flexible screen pivot, which enables you to view and place it in interesting ways....

I'm entirely hooked by this ultra-mobile computing revolution. I'm just waiting to see if the 9-inch Eee or the 9-inch Cloud will be the better computer, overall, before I jump to my next platform.
Yes, the cloudbook does have its share of bugs, which made me reconsider buying it.

There is another brand out with specs close to that of the cloudbook. It's the Neo Explore X1. It's already out in the market (I saw a few shops in Greenhills selling it for Php17, 000). You may want to check that out also.

The Neo has good specs but the unit is too "chunky" and looks like it was made to be sold by Toys-R-Us.

Kaya nga e. Pero I believe it has a small power supply to preserve the data written on its flash memory. Sa pagkakaintindi ko merong small battery supply maski ang mga flash drive. Theory is that RAM ang flash drive, kung icucut-off ang power mabubura ang laman nito. We used to install our DOOM game sa ram drive ng mga 386 and 486 pcs namin dati para mabilis magload, pero once you turn the damn thing off burado ang laman nito. Unlike if its written on a hard drive. Your inputs please.

BTW: I was referring to the input of Psylocke. I forgot to click on the quote message on reply button. mea culpa. . .

ram needs power so it could retain data

flash doesn't. there's no battery. besides there's no room for a battery in a tiny microSD

    different technology.

New carrying case for the Eee... previously, I was using a cheap bag I got at Robinsons, but the nylon strap started unravelling. Still can't find the proper Sammie case, as Samsonites in Eee size have absolutely no padding (unforgiveable, considering the price)... but I found something nearly as good as a laptop bag:

It's a Hedgren... got it for just under 2.5k. It's padded in front and on the sides with flexible styro, and it has some padding in the back. Strap is heavy duty with metal instead of plastic... overall, very good bag... and best of all, the Eee fits pretty snugly, and there's a secondary main pocket where you can put your adapter, mouse, external drive and other knick-knacks. And my phone fits in the side pocket, too... Great buy!

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

    hi guys.

i think i'll be having a eeepc soon. ask ko lang:

for me, 2gb is NOT enough. since it doesn't have and HD, but rather have an flash memory, can i put an SD card in the card lot all the time as its "hard Drive"? whats the biggest possible sd card that i can plug in to the EEE? and how much? im planning to install these programs: winamp, limewire, of course ms office, tuneup utilities, the other neccesary stuff like firefox(browser) and songs. i think there are more or less 200 songs that ill be putting in to the laptop. what size of hardisk or flash memory can i put in? an external portable hard disk might be a it bulky since ill be carrying the laptop itself plus that portable HD. that why im considering a big sd card. pwede kaya yun? naisip ko lang naman. sana pwede..

when will that 8.9inch screen be available in the philippines? and yes, the 7 might be so small, but i think its bearable. but bigger is better.

btw, there's a laptop sale here in my place. when that EEE came here in the Philippines, it cost 18k. when it arrived here in my place, it costs 15k. because of the sale, it cost 14 990.

4gb SD cards can be had for ~$60, maybe less. I think there already are 8gb SD cards and bigger.
