The ASUS Eee PC is slightly larger than half an A4 paper, and will come in white, black, and other pastel colors.

Now, the big question... would you consider buying one if ever?

I would. If anything, it'll be great for travel. It looks a bit bigger than my portable Sony DVD player which has an 8" widescreen lcd. It's also much better for surfing the net than my PSP. Having WinXP as the OS, I can play a lot of older games on it. It'll keep me entertained for those long airport waits.

Just wondering if the thing has a hard drive. If not, where is the OS installed?

^i guess in the flash memory? IMO 8gig is too small...that's if it relies solely on flash memory..

a 40GB or 60GB harddrive would seal the deal for me.

I would get one... portable computer needs.

It runs either on Linux or Windows XP. But if you plan to use XP, best to get 1 or 2 gigs RAM.

I don't think it'll need that much. The most intensive tasks it'll see is mainly gaming. With a 900mhz Celeron, I'd say gaming will be limited to games made from the late 90's to say, 2001 plus any retro-gaming via DOSBox or ScummVM. I wouldn't go with anything more sophisticated than say, Quake 2. That game ran fine with 32mb ram and Win95/98SE. 512mb should be plenty with XP esp if used mainly for office work/web surfing/IM.

top of the line unit has 16gb of hd space and a gig of ram. unfortunately, the flash mem chips are soldered directly into the lappy's mobo. so no aftermarket slap-and-go upgrade option there. but the good thing is, the eeepc has a decent card reader which allows users to plug in a relatively high capacity CF storage card (16 or even 64gb maybe) and viola! instant mini media hub.

With a current price tag of 17k+, I might as well go with a real laptop with a price tag of 25k+. At least you can do more and play more faster with a real laptop. Also, you'd be better off with a Nokia N95 or iPhone, at least those can make calls and longer battery life. Or you can wait for a local brand laptop supplier to release their similar version with a price tag of around 12k+. IBM/Lenovo also has a similar one too...

It seems like some people already have a unit. From early reviews, it looks like the Xandros OS can handle most video file formats. So, I guess if I do buy one, I'd stick with the default Xandros OS install.

Here's the discussion of the ASUS Eee at Ars Technica:

Solid State HDD <--- this makes it expensive compared to other notebooks.

Yup. It also has no moving parts and is very fast.

Eee PC was available at PC Corner since Nov 15 2007 but on a reservation basis. So medyo nahirapan ako maghanap pero got lucky at complink Alabang town center and was able to purchase one. The staff there were very accomodating (uy, di ako staff ng complink, pero thanks kay Mary Anne and Annabelle), and they were able to upgrade my ram to 1GB since I wanted it at 1 GB since I was planning on installing win xp. So for the 4G model, I gto it at 18K (PC corner had it at 17,999.00) tapos swap sa 512 to 1GB na RAM, additional 1K, total 19K php.

I would want to make a brief and mini review, but Eee PCs pros and cons have been covered all over the net so provide ko na lang links to some articles :

A mini review from hardwarezone.com forumer phiber with some game benchmarks as a test....:
    http://forums.hardwarezone.com/showt...8&page=1&pp=15

From notebook review, Kevin provided an Asus Eee PC Tweak Guide : http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4062
it has some benchmark using win xp as well as useful links to softwares with small footprint that you can use for your Eeepc

From Eeeuser.com forumer silurius and torowl
how to niltexp for Eee PC : http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:nLitexp

    My first impressions :
    - really tiny, it does belong to the UMPC (ulttra mobile PC), mas malaki ng konti sa size ng 2 DVD cases on top of each other.
    - Performance is on par on core solo UMPC (7 to 10 inchers) pero medyo mabagal whem comparing it to my core duo notebook, pero sa price nya at sa segment nya na UMPC, its a good buy. I know you can have a 15.4 incher at ~25 to 30K in some places, pero those are Desktop replacement notebooks, not UMPCs which normally ranges at 50K to 120K.
    - Got mine already running in xp, wifey did not like the xandros linux interface. My current win xp footprint is only ~ 800 MB, and this is following only the tips provided by Asus on their manual. the Linux was also good but was not able to really work my way around it that much.
    - Really fast in booting, could be due to the SSD. pero maliit lang cap nya at 4GB, kaya dapat i nLite mo yung original version mo ng win xp prior to install.

Overall, I would rate it as one of my best purchase so far, and I'm considering buying another one.

Sensya na sa haba ng post.

I dunno, people have shelled out more than P20K for something with a CPU speed of 206mhz, 40mb ram, 2gig storage, 2.2" LCD screen with built-in speakers and microphone, with wireless connectivity and built-in camera.

It might not fit your needs or wants but it is exactly what other people need. Don't underestimate the specifications against the whole package.

^^ Agree, I don't think buyers will just shell out P20K unless the specs of that product will satisfy their needs.

People who would be buying this product would have "portability" and "lightweight" high on their priority list.
