Rush 2: What happened next for Lauda and Hunt
Monday 07th October 2013, 23:26 by Graham Keilloh

You are a motor racing fan (or at least I assume you are, as otherwise why would you be here?). Therefore, most probably you’ve seen Rush by now. The story of Niki Lauda vs. James Hunt; their titanic F1 rivalry, as interpreted by Hollywood. And Rush left us at the end of the 1976 season with the two on top of the world: Lauda having returned from his horrific and fiery mid-season Nurburgring accident, in a scarcely plausible timespan, to defend his F1 world title. And Hunt having made good on his potential and defied his many doubters by pipping Lauda to become world champion himself.

As is indicated by the fact that Rush was made at all, the two were a quintessential pair of protagonists, discrepant personalities that could have been borne of the imagination of a Hollywood scriptwriter had they not actually existed. Lauda: intense, anti-social, rational; Hunt: expressive, controversial, instinctive. Seemingly all they had in common was supreme talent. - See more at:

De Villota found dead in hotel room - GPUpdate.net

De Villota found dead in hotel room

    11 October 2013

Ex-Marussia reserve driver María de Villota has been found dead in a hotel room in Seville. The Spaniard, who was working for the Banbury-based outfit when she suffered life-threatening injuries in a testing crash last year, was 33.

A statement published on de Villota's Facebook page on Friday morning, signed by her family, explained: "Dear friends: Maria has left us, she had to go to heaven like all angels. We thank God for the extra year and a half that he left her with us."

Although de Villota lost her right eye and suffered major skull damage after hitting a trailer during the aforementioned straight line test at Duxford Aerodrome, she was able to recover and returned to the F1 paddock at this year's Spanish Grand Prix.

De Villota formerly contested the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) and Superleague Formula, and was the daughter of ex-Formula 1 racer Emilio.

She was in the Spanish city to give a presentation ahead of the launch of her autobiography, 'La vida es un regalo' (Life is a gift), and according to reports had appeared in perfect health on Monday.

Spanish motor racing president Carlos Gracia, who said de Villota had sent him an email at about midnight on Monday, told Marca newspaper: "All I know for now is that her personal assistant, Arancha, came into the room and could not wake her.

"She was already dead. Apparently it was a natural death, but we know nothing," he added.

Manuel Franco, the F1 correspondent for the sports newspaper AS, added: "There were no drugs found or any signs of violence, so she is likely to have died of natural causes."

Spanish television Antena 3, who said de Villota has suffered from migraines since recovering from the near-fatal 2012 crash, revealed there will be an autopsy.

GPUpdate.net extends its condolences to the family and friends of María de Villota.

Formula One: De Villota crash linked to death - family
AFP News – 17 hours ago

The family of former Formula One test driver Maria de Villota have said her sudden death on Friday was linked to the severe injuries she suffered in a crash last year.
De Villota suffered serious head and facial injuries, including the loss of her right eye in the crash, whilst testing for the Marrusia team at Duxford Aerodrome in Cambridgeshire, England last July.

The 33-year-old was found dead in a hotel room in the southern Spanish city of Seville on Friday morning and the autopsy carried out on her body confirmed that she had died of natural causes.

"Maria died around six in the morning whilst she was sleeping as a consequence of the neurological injuries she suffered on July 3, 2012, the forensic doctor has informed us," Isabel de Villota, Maria's sister, told reporters.

"Maria has gone but she has left us with a very clear message of happiness and hope and that is what we are moving forward with at this time."
Isabel de Villota added that her sister would be buried in a private family ceremony in Madrid.

De Villota was in Seville to take part in a conference organised by the "What Really Matters" foundation promoting human values and was due to launch her book titled "Life is a gift" in Madrid on Monday.

The daughter of former Formula 1 driver Emilio De Villota, she was the first Spanish female to enter the sport when she joined Marussia in 2012 as a test driver.
However, disaster struck just four months later when the horrific crash left her in a coma and battling for her life.

Her return to the public spotlight in recent months had been seen as a great inspiration of triumph over difficulty and she was seen as a pioneer for women in a very male-dominated sport.

"I hope that, without having to go through an accident like mine, you can feel the joy of being alive and enjoy life," she wrote in the introduction to the book to explain the motivation behind it.

The news was met with shock in the motorsport world where she was a loved and respected figure.

The Grand Prix Drivers' Association confirmed there will be a one minute's silence to mark her passing before Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix and the podium ceremony afterwards will also be dedicated to her.

The season may effectively be over, but it was a good race.

Fantastic watching Vettel work for his win rather than romping away. He totally deserves that one, due to his strong first stint. He somehow managed to hold it all together at the end of the first stint on very worn out tires.

ALONSO PASSES SCHUMACHER TO BECOME F1'S TOP SCORER

With his fourth place at the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday, Fernando Alonso became the highest points-scorer in Formula 1, displacing seven-time Michael Schumacher from the top of the list.

The Spaniard has scored 1,571 points in F1, five more than the German, but has been helped largely by the new points scoring system which awards 25 to the race winner.

“To see my name leading the points record for a sport like Formula 1 is something I never imagined. Thanks to everyone!” he said.

In contrast, Schumacher mostly raced in an era when a win secured only ten points, which can now be achieved with a fifth place. Should he have raced with the current allocation of points, Schumacher would have scored 3,890 points in his illustrious career, closely followed by Alain Prost. Alonso would have been third.

This offers little consolation to Alonso, who has been watching the rear wing of Sebastian Vettel’s car ever since his joined Ferrari in 2010, the year when the new points system came into force.

The Red Bull driver is third in the all-time list with 1,351 career-points to his credit, ahead of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and McLaren driver Jenson Button
