Engine mapping clampdown set for Valencia - GPUpdate.net
22 June 2011
A tightening up of engine mapping regulations will kick into affect from this weekend’s European Grand Prix in Valencia. The change will prevent teams from making full use of their exhaust-blown diffusers when under off-throttle conditions.
Earlier this week, teams were notified of the much-anticipated change by FIA delegate and Race Director Charlie Whiting. Although the blown diffuser concept – pointing exhaust exits backwards in order to generate extra downforce with hot flowing gases – was introduced by Red Bull in 2010, it is only this season when more teams have tuned their cars to make use of the device when off the throttle, which governing body the FIA classes as a non-aerodynamic aid.
Further changes will be reinforced from the following British Grand Prix, with Red Bull – as inventors of the concept - tipped to be one of the worst hit teams. It is also widely known that both Renault and Mercedes are making much use of the devices this year.
“The FIA's note will cause all teams (whether or not they use a blown floor) to change their operation,” Renault Technical Director James Allison explains. “The headline changes for the Silverstone Grand Prix are as follows: when the driver lifts his foot fully off the throttle pedal, then the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) maps must be set up so that the engine closes the throttle.
“Previously, it was possible to configure the engine maps to leave the throttle open and reduce the engine power by other means. Finally, with immediate effect, it will no longer be possible to reprogramme the ECU configuration between qualifying and the race in the expectation that this will discourage extreme ECU setups for qualifying.”
If you lift the throttle pedal, dapat sarado din yung engine. YUng gumagamit ng blown diffuser, sige pa rin pag bomba ng hot air sa rear diffusers kahit di na naka open throttle. Advantage: added downforce sa corners. Would be interesting to see the laptimes during practice tomorrow since they'll enforce the engine mapping ban ...
Editorial | Slater: One final blast for Red Bull? | ESPNSTAR.com
By Steve Slater
The European Grand Prix at Valencia will be the last before the FIA clamps down on the use of ‘exhaust blown diffusers'. The technology, which continues to blow gases through the exhaust pipe even if the throttle is closed, is thought to have most benefited the Red Bull and Renault teams so far this season.
As has happened so often in Formula One, the teams cleverly exploited a gap in the regulations to boost their cars' performance. Back in 2009, teams began to use the blast of exhaust gases to the rear diffuser to generate more downforce and hence cornering grip.
However they had a problem. As the drivers closed the throttle the exhaust flow reduced and the back of the car became unstable just when drivers needed the grip most.
Engineers quickly found a solution to the problem. Instead of closing the throttle to cut off the power, they instead retarded the ignition timing when the driver backed off the accelerator. As the pressures inside the engine remained high, so did the blast of the exhaust onto the diffuser.
Then at the beginning of this season, we began to hear a new, distinctive rasp from car exhausts as they braked for corners. Renault, who also supply engines to Red Bull, had taken the concept even further by continuing to spray fuel into the red-hot exhausts on the over-run.
As the fuel burned and expanded, this ‘afterburner' boosted still further the airflow onto the diffuser. However the use of the technology provoked a clamp-down from the FIA.
"An exhaust system is there for the purpose of exhausting gasses from the engine and when you're off-throttle, it isn't doing that any more" explains FIA Technical Delegate Charlie Whiting. He believes therefore, that the exhaust is being used to influence the aerodynamic characteristics of the car, which infringes the technical regulations regarding the use of driver controlled aerodynamics.
From the race after Valencia, the British Grand Prix, teams will be limited to just 10% of the airflow in the cars' exhausts when the driver lifts off the accelerator. From 2012, the FIA plans to outlaw all use of blown diffusers, demanding that exhausts will exit upwards through the bodywork, well away from any aerodynamic aid.
Ironically if the Red Bull's performance does dip Vettel might hope that not just McLaren, but Ferrari might start winning, to split the points from the second half of the season. Alternatively he could just prove us all wrong, by continuing his early season winning streak right through the year!
Its a conspiracy against the bulls, instigated to help the prancing horse you know...
Marko: Bans in place to assist Ferrari
Thursday 23rd June 2011
Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has cried foul in light of recent FIA clampdowns, saying they are only being implemented to help Ferrari.
As of this weekend's European GP, teams will no longer be permitted to change engine mapping, which could hamper Red Bull's efforts.
The reigning World Champs are believed to use extreme engine map to assist them in qualifying this season, prior to reverting to a safer mode for the race.
The FIA's clampdown though, doesn't end there as at the following race, the British GP, off-throttle blown diffusers will be banned, another move that could slow the Bulls in their quest for back-to-back titles.
And Marko reckons it is all a conspiracy to give Ferrari the upper hand.
"If the others cannot copy us, they ask for our ideas to be banned," he told La Stampa.
"A decision like this is the current season is strange and arouses suspicion.
"This definitely favours Ferrari and this decision seems to have been taken to give them an advantage."

Bakit mababa si Vettel???
At the next race at Silverstone on 10 July, the use of so-called off-throttle blowing of diffusers, which help to increase downforce by blowing hot gasses over the rear of the car's floor while the driver is not pressing the accelerate, will be banned.
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner confirmed that the team would trial a Silverstone specification during practice in Valencia, leading to suggestions that was why Vettel was 2.5secs off his team-mate's leading time.
