Was this in the US or in RP?

By itself, getting into fights wasn't enough to make me want to kill people. I got teased a lot during my whole freshman year and the result was a lot of fisticuffs which got me kicked out and repeating my freshman year.

After that, everything was fine and dandy until I got into college. Then, frustrations with women and the double standard practiced by my parents really started taking its toll mentally. I didn't even realize how bad the pressure was until my wife's cousins came over (from the US) looked at my photo album and pointed out picture by picture how I was deteriorating. In a few a short years, I went from looking like a youthful teen to looking like a killer from Muntinlupa jail or something. The resentment against many aspects of Philippine society was literally consuming me. It didn't seem so apparent at the time. But, my wife's cousins were shocked to see my appearance. They talked to their mom. Their mom talked to my mom. My mom talked to me and said I'll be going back with them.

Once I got back here, it was like a breath of fresh air. The past was quickly forgotten. But once in a while, I'd look at those photos of me going down the toilet. Looking at the photos during the very lowest point of my life, I had the same vacant stare as Cho did. I get chills just looking at them.....

Sorry to hear that bro. I know it may not mean much to you, but the best "revenge" for me is to show how much better you are now than they are. Keep your eyes forward, and not on the past. We've all gone through similar stuff in school. In my case it was elementary. Funny thing is, I recently had drinks with one of the guys who used to bully me in elementary, and it made me smile (inwards) that I am now taller than he is, and I think I'm better off, financially and otherwise. No hard feelings, it was all in the past, it was just nice to see someone from the "old school" and reminisce.

Earlier in the thread, someone asked where were the parents (of the gunman) in all these. I have to ask the same thing. I can understand the need to keep a low profile. But, they've been awfully quiet. Too quiet.

ah HS, had a similar experience with these frat guys. in junior prom, 1 of them had a crush on my date. the week after on a school day, this 1 frat guy kept on asking me who my date was. never budged and never gave her up. if he insisted and he used some of his buddies to intimidate me, I'll allow them to bully me. but i'll definitely get back at that 1 person who started it all when he is alone. sira pala ulo nya eh, 1st love ko yun date ko noon eh hehehe no one is more motivated than a person in-love.

usually mga frat HS guys, yan yun mga takot pag nag-iisa na. pero nadaan naman sa diplomasya etong kaklase kong matapang ...

I think Cho's problems is far deeper than mere bullying. He ranted against the rich. He ranted against women. He also ranted against Christianity. I don't think any of his problems were about race either because he regarded the Columbine killers as martyrs and they were both white.

His problems were more "institutionalized". He was ranting at aspects of society as a whole. He didn't want to be a part of that society because he probably felt like an outsider. But, he had no choice because of his parents. He probably had resentment building up since he moved to the US which eventually reached the breaking point....

I think it was yesterday when I heard on the news that they issued a public apology for what their son did. That they didn't know he was capable of such an evil act, or words to that effect.

It's not the first time I've heard parents say that and it probably won't be the last. I'd like to hear more about how their family life was because if I'm not mistaken, as with many Asian families, the children are expected to obey their parents without question and without regard for their own welfare. No room to whine, no outlet for frustration, no room for failure.

I'm just speculating. But, it's pretty common. I can already see it with the way my wife constantly pressures our daughter. I already had to pull my wife into a corner to caution her and give our daughter some room. She needs room to fail and to pick herself back up. Otherwise, how's she going to learn? Tough being a parent.....

He ranted against the rich coz those people who bullied him are probably rich kids. He ranted about women coz he probably got rejected numerous times.

His hate towards segments of society evolved from hatred towards individuals who hurt him. To him, those individuals represented the segment of society they belong to.

The same way the local communist militants here "hate" all capitalists. They probably got fired or couldnt get a job or their lives are utterly miserable and they blame it on capitalists... so they want to overthrow the capitalist system.

Cho didnt have to kill the exact individuals who hurt him in the past. He just had to kill people who belonged to the segment of society he hated.

Para sa kanya, lahat ng rich kids, lahat ng babae, pwede sya i-hurt.

How these "segments" of society hurt him still has to be determined. Was it actual bullying as in "in your face", beating-type bullying or was it the sting of rejection. Did he resent the mere fact that others were much better off and luckier than him? It could be any combination of those factors.

I realize the latter is more of a Pinoy trait as I interpreted it in the "mayabang" thread somewhere else here in the Pitstop Cafe. But any Asian newcomer who immigrates to the US can get a dose of culture shock and think the same way especially when others consider him an outsider.

That's why I'm kind of glad I have a daughter. She's much less likely to encounter hostility if we moved to other lands.

I'd like to believe the assailant was mentally troubled. The videotaped message he sent to NBC did not particularly identify anyone who could have wronged him. The rants that he spouted sounded like sweeping generalizations. Sheesh! I could never imagine anyone in who in his right mind would shoot unarmed people like they were cattle. If he wanted to die, he didn't need to involve other people.

You haven't seen much, then. Unfortunately, I've seen too many incidents like these through the years. I don't mean just school/campus shootings. I also include those in other locations.

When that Post Office mailman in Edmond, OK shot to death 14 of his co-workers back in 1986, I was 30 miles away. It was shocking to hear every ambulance siren in Oklahoma City going off and every tv channel focused on the shooting. By the Tim McVeigh blew up the Murrah federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995, I've since left the place. But, the news of the dead was no less shocking.

Exactly a couple of years before, David Koresh and 84 of his cult followers died while under siege by the FBI April 19, 1993. It was no accident Tim Mcveigh blew up the Murrah building April 19, 1995. I kept a close watch throughout Tim Mcveigh's trial because one of his co-conspirators, Terry Nichols, had a Pinay wife which to me was kind of a strange combination.

Many parents of kids like Cho never imagined their kids were capable of such acts. They obviously need a wakeup call.

Yep. I guess not. There's really no way to know why these senseless shootings happen. Just recently, I think a former NASA employee shot his superior in Houston, TX.

When people don't have to worry about where and how they're going to get their next meal, where their next shelter's going to be, they have the luxury to think of the unthinkable.

Add: I hope that makes sense. It's past midnight and I'm just rambling on and on.

    Amen to that.

I'm not the most religious person around and I owe The Man Upstairs a lot. But, times are such that it's good to reaffirm my beliefs every once in a while.

Although Tim McVeigh and his co-conspirators weren't outright white supremacists, they were tilted to the far right enough to make me wonder why Terry Nichols would marry a Pinay. There's something very strange about that which I found unsettling.

Of course, once the story about the Oklahoma City Bombing broke, she divorced his a**.
