^yup, thats one possible solution. MMDA ngayon nanghuhuli ng mga colorum buses para mabawasan mga bus sa EDSA at mapunta sa mga may legal na prangkisa ang mga pasahero. This should also be done to Jeepneys

Doon lang sa may amin... may mga times na mas maraming colorum (no yellow plate, no proper markings) jeepney kaysa sa mga legal. And these are the guys who hold up traffic as they stop beside a waiting jeepney to steal their passengers. Why the JODAs don't have their barkers beat these a$$holes off with sticks, I don't know.

Luging-lugi talaga ang mga jeepney drivers because they don't have enough customers. And why? because there are too many illegal lines in each area. With proper policing, there won't be so much grumbling. True, nahihirapan sila sa fuel costs, but lahat naman ganyan. And striking won't help any. Sila lang talaga ang lugi sa strike.

And even if payagan silang itaas ang fares? Lugi pa rin sila... dahil nanakawin pa rin ng nanakawin yung mga pasahero nila ng mga gagong colorum na yan.

Maybe its time to make their services more efficient. Di ba? Para panalo ang commuter at driver.

Piston denies May 12 transport strike

MANILA, Philippines -- Transport group Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (Piston) has denied reports that it would conduct the nationwide transport strike on May 12, its spokesman said on Wednesday.

In a phone interview, George San Mateo said that reports circulating in both print and radio that the nationwide transport strike was set on May 12 were mere speculations.

“Not until we hold a press conference, all reports on the strike are just speculations,” he said.

San Mateo said this after Orlando Marquez, spokesman of partylist group United Transport Alliance Koalisyon (1-Utak), said the date of the strike was initially set on May 12.

“[The strike announcement] did not come from [PISTON] and other groups are just riding on the issue,” he added.

San Mateo said the only reason they would call off the strike would be if Congress would pass the bill temporarily suspending the implementation of the extended value added tax (EVAT) on petroleum products.

Meanwhile, Piston led around 150 jeepney drivers, students, and other militant groups in a noise barrage at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Cubao, Quezon City, as a prelude to the strike.

“It’s just one initiative of Piston as a build-up for the nationwide transport strike,” San Mateo said.

Piston is calling for the removal of EVAT on oil products and abolition of the oil deregulation law.

Transport group sets strike on May 12

The United Transport Alliance Coalition (1-Utak) will launch a nationwide protest on May 12 to demand a P0.50 provisional fare increase.

Orlando Marquez, 1-Utak spokesman, said the group is mounting a strike that will not only affect Metro Manila but also the provinces as well.

Marquez said the minimum P7.50 fare is no longer enough to address the weekly price increases in diesel products.

Oil companies implemented a P1 increase in oil prices Saturday morning. Diesel is already at P42 per liter while gasoline prices have reached P50.

Philippine Confederation of Drivers Organization-Alliance of Concerned Transport Operators (PCDO-ACTO) earlier threatened a nationwide strike if the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) junks their petition for a fare increase.

"If ever our petition for P1.50 increase will not be heard, we will conduct a nationwide strike," Efren de Luna, PCDO-ACTO president, said.

De Luna said the LTFRB was scheduled to hear their petition for a P1.50 increase in the minimum jeepney fare rate for the first five kilometers. The minimum jeepney fare rate is P7.50.

He said the LTFRB has no reason to junk their petition citing the series of oil price hikes in the last two months.

"There is a memorandum circular that allows individual operators to file fare increase petitions once oil prices increase," de Luna said.

If ever the LTFRB decides against the petition, he said the government should at least provide the transport sector a P3 subsidy for pump prices.

Piston pushing through with transport strike Monday

MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE) The leftist transport group Piston (Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide or United Organizations of Drivers and Operators Nationwide) is pushing through with a nationwide strike beginning 12:01 a.m. Monday, its national president announced Friday.

In a press conference, Steve Ranjo said the continued increase of oil prices and the government's incapacity to arrest the price hikes are both “anti-driver” and “anti-commuter.”

“Nasa P41.98 na ang halaga ng diesel at nasa P50 na ang gasolina. Ayon sa tatlong dambuhalang oil companies, mahigit P6 pa ang kanilang itataas na kanilang ipatutupad sa pamamagitan ng pagtataas ng piso per week. Kaya malamang na sa Mayo 10 ay muli na namang magpapatupad ng pisong pagtaas [Diesel is already P41.98 and gasoline is at P50. The big three oil companies say they will continue raising prices by more than P6 by increasing it at P1 a week. It is likely there will be another P1 hike by May 10],” Ranjo said.

Reacting to Piston’s announcement, lawyer Manny Mahipos of the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said the agency respects the right of the transport groups to peaceful assembly.

However, he said, the groups “should balance their obligation to the riding public and their rights to public assembly.”

“We don't encourage the drivers to strike but we also respect their right,” Mahipos said.

He added that the LTFRB would not sanction drivers who participate in the strike.

Piston secretary general George San Mateo said there will be 12 key “rally centers” in Metro Manila: Alabang, Monumento, Novaliches Bayan, Cubao, Marikina, Taytay Market, Kalayaan Avenue corner Kamias, Welcome Rotonda, Philcoa, and Pier South.

Elsewhere in the country, Piston affiliates will also go on strike in Baguio City, Central Luzon, Southern Tagalog, and the Bicol provinces in Luzon; Panay, Cebu and Negros Occidental in the Visayas; and Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and the cities of Iligan, Butuan and General Santos in Mindanao.

Transport groups in Negros have agreed to stage a two-day strike, from May 12 to 13.

Mahipos said they are coordinating with other government agencies on measures to help commuters during the transport strike.

Piston is demanding that the government scrap the 12% extended Value Added Tax (EVAT) on oil products, repeal the oil deregulation law, and arrest the continuous rise of oil prices.

“Hindi na kakayanin ng mga tsuper, operator, at mamamayan ang patuloy na pagtaas ng langis lalo na patuloy ang pagtaas ng bigas, bilihin, pandesal, kuryente, tubig, matrikula, at iba pa [Drivers, operators and citizens can no longer stand the continuing rise of oil prices, what with the increases in the prices of rice, bread, electricity, water, tuition, and other goods],” Ranjo said.

“The greediness of the big oil companies and the collusion of the corrupt Arroyo government is making out suffering unbearable,” he added.

But Mahipos said the LTFRB was doing everything it could to help the drivers, including adding another P2 to the government’s fuel subsidy for public transport drivers and the public utility vehicles (PUVs) modernization program.

Piston claims a membership of more than 200,00 jeepney drivers and operators nationwide.

Earlier this week, transport groups Pasang Masda and Mega Manila Operators and Drivers Alliance (MMODA) announced that they would not participate in the nationwide transport strike.

Despite this, Piston was confident that the transport strike would be successful.

“Sisikapin naming maabot ang pinakamalaking porsyento ng driver na lalahok sa tigil-pasada sa Lunes [We will try to convince the majority of drivers to join the transport strike on Monday],” San Mateo said.

Ranjo said Piston would not join the petition for a fare increase that other transport groups are pursuing because “this is not our priority. Our demand is that the weekly increase in oil prices stop.”
