Reopen the Bataan Nuclear Plant

THE COUNTRY, especially the Visayas and Mindanao, is suffering from an energy crisis similar to the one it experienced in the early 1990s.

We will continue to suffer blackouts—or brownouts—as long as we don’t change our attitude towards nuclear power.

We have been brainwashed into believing that the mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) in Morong town posed a grave danger to the population because of the possibility of a leak.

What most of us don’t know is that the unfounded fear was foisted on us by then President Cory and her subordinates who were on a vengeful spree against ousted dictator Marcos.

All the things Marcos and his wife Imelda built must be destroyed, according to their mindset, because they were the fruits of an evil regime.

Among Marcos’ pet projects was the BNPP which would have brought electricity to the entire country, but which the Cory administration looked at with spite.

For all her saintliness, President Cory committed many blunders, including the mothballing of the BNPP.

The BNPP, for which the country has already paid many millions of dollars every month, must be reopened to solve our power crisis.

* * *

No, we’re not disgracing Cory’s memory if we reopened the BNPP.

Let’s not be too sentimental. Just because we loved Cory so much doesn’t mean that we should also hate all the things she hated.

The times call for being practical: Let’s reopen the BNPP.

* * *

True, Cory, was honest and sincere in running the government. But she didn’t know that some of her relatives and close friends were allegedly robbing the country blind.

The term “Kamaganak Inc.,” coined by the late columnist Louie Beltran, referred to accusations of corruption allegedly committed by Cory’s relatives.

How do we know that Kamaganak Inc. would not be resurrected if her son, Noynoy Aquino, wins the presidency?

Done right, Nuclear power is safe, clean, and very efficient.
Done wrong, well we can end up with another Chernobyl. =)

Personally I'm in favor of going Nuclear. It's several hundred times cleaner than coal or oil burning plants in terms of damage to the environment, and we can get much higher power outputs given similar structure size, or operational expense.

with this corrupt government, a big NO!!!

pro-nuclear advocates in government only see the huge $$$$ commissions and that's my impression. kung sa rice importation walang patawad, diyan pa? seems no government project is done without the so-called SOPs including BOTs

so the law-abiding taxpayers will pay for a plant more than double its price OR quality down-graded to accommodate SOPs to be given to all hierarchy of government.

so what else is new?

well, think about it. it's better than having no electricity and no means of production

besides, TV broadcast stations, cell sites, cellphones, radio station, WiFi etc. emit more environmental radiation than nuclear plants

well, safety and stability depends on the type of reactor tbh.

are we ready? I don't think so...but we should be fast! It's about time.

this won't fly though 'coz I think there will be a lot of "powerful" people who will get affected if this pushes through, especially people behind our power utilities.

and most especially uneducated people who will be brainwashed by the power utilities spin doctors.

i just saw one part of maintenance of a nuclear power plant on National Geographic last sunday and i was like.. dam*!!! i don't think we're ready for that yet..

BUT!!! i truly believe that it is high time for the government to support and fund nuclear power research and development as well as harvesting natural energy like SPAIN (has one of the few solar collectors used to supply electricity in the world...). We can't stay idle or we will be left behind and stagnate which will result on lack of power generation capacity and higher prices which could pull the economy down too...

solar energy is more expensive has less dough albeit, very expensive electricity bills. again, reactor management and maintenance depends on the type of reactor and reaction. Micro-reactors found in the basement of Japanese apartments are examples of low cost low maintenance "batteries"/room heater

We have to go for nuclear power. Start identifying people NOW who can handle these affairs, training, and others.

Yes, storing nuclear waste is a problem (am I correct that's plutonium?). Maybe if the academe and our best minds in the scientific community can further utilize this waste to some useful purpose.

We don't have enough volcanoes to drill deep holes in their guts to tap their geothermal power. Dams are good only when there's water, and we're at the mercy of OPEC and the oil companies if we use crude or diesel drinking power plants.

Solar, wind, and maybe wave are good, but supply ain't steady. If their excesses can be stored and discharged in the grid when needed will be great!

Instead of these so-called "environmental" hardliners saying "NO NUKES" all the time, why not think of solutions to solve our power problem?

I do like GH's hamster wheel suggestion...as long as we can pay them, its a perfect solution to our employment problem. No education needed, basta kayang tumakbo/maglakad 8 hrs straight!

bumping this thread.

whats the latest for the BNPP? any chance of powering it up again?

or

constructing a new nuclear powerplant which is more modern, advance and "safe"?

I still vote for the giant hamster wheel idea.

Some interesting articles on mini nuclear reactors. Who would ever have thought that the words "green" and "nuclear" could be used in the same light:
http://origin-www.fastcompany.com/bl...clear-reactors

http://www.fastcompany.com/blog/arie...ors-mainstream

http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/...in-the-offing/

Come to think of it, nuke-powered aircraft carriers, subs and battleships are like modular reactors, powering some ships the size of small RP towns; mas hi tech lang nga. Modular reactors, anyone?
