Never say die! SMC to produce alcohol in Ginebra plant which RSA plans to donate to LGUs, hospitals
Bilyonaryo Ramon S. Ang is moving to meet the surge in demand for hand sanitizers brought about by the virus outbreak pandemic.
Ang said San Miguel Corp. would produce 70 percent ethyl alcohol products in one of its facilities which would be distributed for free to public hospitals communities through their local government units.
“While hand-washing is still the best defense, hand sanitizers with 70 percent alcohol can be your next best option where soap and water are not available. We have the means and capability to produce this, and make it available for free to LGUs and public hospitals. We are working on getting the necessary clearances from the relevant government agencies, to produce this for public use. We ask that they help expedite clearances,” said Ang.
Ang said SMC spirits subsidiary, Ginebra San Miguel Inc., has began initial production of the alcohol over the weekend, for initial use in its facilities and for thousands of employees.
“This is so our facilities and our own employees will not be taking away from the already limited supply that’s available to the public. Our main intention is to get this to our government and healthcare providers at the soonest possible time,” he said
Made through the fermentation of molasses, 70 percent ethyl alcohol is known to kill most germs and viruses which the government needs for disinfection of public, healthcare, and public facilities.
San Miguel is also donating over 13,000 units of its Protect Plus Gold disinfectant powder. Each canister can clean and disinfect a space of up to 650 square meters.
The product, produced by the San Miguel Food Group’s Animal Health Care division, is used for sanitizing air spaces and surfaces in facilities and even in hog farms whenever there are disease outbreaks.
Labeled potassium monopersulfate triple salt, it is safe for use even when there are people inside the room or space being sanitized.
“We are in a race against time to try and stop the spread of Covid-19 virus. Our government and healthcare front liners need all the support and help they can get,” he added.
hindi lang pala rubbing alcohol. Pati pala pagkain magdonate si ramon ang para doon sa totoong vulnerable communities like yung mga arawan ang sweldo.

As the country grapples with the impact of COVID-19 and Metro Manila’s lockdown officially takes effect, San Miguel Corporation (SMC) is stepping up its social responsibility efforts. As one of the biggest producers and distributors of food, beverages, fuel, oil, infrastructure, and power in the country, SMC will now be donating free food and alcohol to those who need it
Food for the Poor and Frontliners
According to SMC president Ramon S. Ang, the conglomerate will be distributing food donations to the most affected and vulnerable communities: the poor or daily wage earners who will lose their income for a month and the frontliners (healthcare workers, hospitals, government workers) who will be facing the virus head on.
Prior to lockdown, thousands succumbed to panic-buying with alcohol, soap, canned goods, tissue paper, and other necessities wiped clean from the shelves. However, Ang emphasizes, “Panic has no purpose at this time.” The SMC head reassured the public that the food supply will not run out as SMC has “the capability to produce enough for everybody and deliver to supermarkets.”
SMC’s food manufacturing facilities will be operating 24/7, while adopting necessary health measures, in order to produce enough food.
“This isn’t about making profits. We have a responsibility to make sure that food is made available to as many people as possible,” said Ang.
Free Alcohol
SMC will also be producing 70-percent ethyl alcohol at one of its facilities, with plans to distribute the product for free to the local government units in need. This will address the shortage of alcohol in all stores across the capital and beyond.
According to Ang, he’s also looking to donate disinfectant powder to LGUs and alcohol in 20-liter containers up to 1,000-liter tote tanks for the disinfection of hospitals, government facilities, and public areas.
For now, SMC is focusing on getting the government greenlight to produce and distribute these products for public use.
“We are in a race against time to try and stop the spread of COVID-19,” explained Ang. “Our government and healthcare frontliners need all the support and help they can get.”
Work-From-Home and Salary for Employees
Meanwhile, its fuel, power, and infrastructure subsidiaries (Petron Corporation, SMC Global Power Holdings Corp., and SMC Infrastructure) will continue to operate as normal.
Majority of SMC offices in Metro Manila have now adopted a work-from-home scheme, while Ang stated that all SMC employees will still receive their monthly income despite the lockdown and possible work discontinuation.

The SM Group has pledged P100 million for efforts to battle the spread of COVID-19 in the Philippines.
In the statement, the group said the amount would go toward providing personal protective equipment (PPEs), test kits, alcohol, and other medical supplies to the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM), and other hospitals.
"As there is a local shortage of personal protective equipment - face masks, gowns, visors, hoods, gloves, and shoe covers, SM is bringing these PPEs in for government hospitals who badly need them," it said.
SM said it has reached out to Manila Healthtek, Inc., the spinoff corporation that will manufacture local test kits developed by the University of the Philippines-National Institute of Health researchers, to distribute 20,000 tests for free to government hospitals. The test kits are currently undergoing field testing.
SM said it is also working with PGH and RITM to see how to expand laboratory testing capacity.
"To provide PPEs and medical supplies to an even wider network of hospitals, SM has also been working actively with UP Medical Foundation Inc. to reach their network of hospitals," it said. --JST, GMA News

To our employees, partners and friends,
In these most trying times, those significantly affected by the COVID-19 situation are the thousands of workers that will be affected by the enhanced community quarantine because their places of work have been closed. These include retail workers, construction workers, service providers, security agencies and employees of many similar businesses who are largely on a no-work-no-pay type of employment.
The Ayala group as a whole, has decided to adopt a COVID-19 emergency response package of P2.4B consisting of wages, bonuses, leave conversions and loan deferments primarily for the extended workforce of our partner employers so they may continue to be paid for the duration of the quarantine period. These include P600M in salary continuance for displaced workers from construction sites, shuttered malls and retail spaces of Makati Development Corporation and the Ayala Malls group. Globe Telecoms has earmarked P270M for its retail store support staff and vendor partners while all other Ayala companies will reserve another P130M in personnel-related financial support.
Furthermore, Ayala Malls will be providing a rent-free period for malls that are not allowed to operate during the community quarantine from March 16 to April 14. The total package will be worth around P1.4B in rent condonation to provide the merchants of these malls financial relief so they can in turn provide the much-needed financial support for their employees during this period.
For its own employees, Ayala will continue to provide salary continuance and financial support where possible as most of these employees will be getting their mid-year bonuses normally paid in April starting today through the end of March. Ayala has also postponed or delayed employee loan payments due to the Ayala Multi-Purpose Cooperative and have introduced special financial assistance programs at subsidized rates.
Ayala continues to ensure that those who are most directly affected by this emergency are taken care of through these financial assistance measures.
As always, stay healthy and be safe.

#SMC sets aside P500M to purchase #PPEs for frontline health workers; urges local manufacturers to boost production to ensure steady supply
San Miguel Corporation (SMC) is tapping its global network of suppliers to purchase P500-million worth of personal protective equipment (PPE) that doctors, nurses and other health care workers desperately need now to continue saving lives amid Covid-19.
“It’s very crucial that we get more PPE – protective masks, gloves, surgical gowns, among others - out there as fast as we can. We are hoping to fill the gap and continue supporting our government in whatever way we can. Our health care workers and government responders are risking their own lives to save ours but they are running out of equipment to protect themselves,” SMC president and COO Ramon S. Ang said.
At the same time, Ang also urged domestic manufacturers to retool their facilities, if they can, to produce these equipment and ramp up production to secure the supply chain.
SMC is currently mapping out available PPE capacity from its own suppliers even as it continues to look for domestic suppliers to help increase production of the protective equipment if they can as the battle against the virus continues.
“We are leveraging our network of suppliers to assist government in addressing this shortage. But this may not be enough. That’s why we are also calling on local suppliers, even the small ones, to come forward. We will help purchase your products and get it out in the market where it’s most needed,”Ang said.
He requested for government, though, to provide private sector with technical specifications and standards the protective items must meet. “And we need to streamline the certification and approval processes so that those who wish to respond can immediately provide the supplies our medical front liners need.”
The company has been repurposing most of its facilities to respond to the need for more protective items and food for the hardest-hit communities. SMC’s Ginebra San Miguel Inc. recently retooled its liquor plants nationwide to produce rubbing alcohol to help front liners fighting the outbreak.
Meanwhile, it started producing nutribun-inspired breads it continuously donates to poor communities severely affected by the quarantine. The company has also donated over half a million kilos of rice, along with canned goods, biscuits and coffee.
To date, the company has donated over 100,000 liters of ethyl alcohol to various front liners in the national and local government as well as public and private hospitals in Luzon. Food donations have, thus far, reached over P100 million. These were delivered to hardest hit areas in NCR, Cavite, Bulacan, Batangas, Laguna, Pampanga, Bataan, Zambales, Quezon, Pangasinan, Marinduque and Sorsogon. The company said it will continue to send out food donations in the coming days
“We are committed to growing this fund for PPEs and continue allocating resources to purchase much-needed protective items. We also invite other businesses to join us in this initiative and work together to support our selfless health care workers on the front lines of this crisis. We are all in this together,” he added.

NGCP donates P1 billion to aid health workers
Danessa Rivera (The Philippine Star
) - March 31, 2020 - 12:00am
MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) is donating to the government a total of P1 billion in cash and in kind to help medical frontliners fight off the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
In a letter to President Duterte, NGCP said the donation would come in goods and medical equipment worth P500 million and in cash also worth P500 million “for other COVID-19 response purposes as may be determined by your Office.”
“NGCP will be coordinating with your team on the turnover of our donation. We will also continue to look for opportunities to support the government in battling this pandemic,” it added.
The grid operator said the donation is on behalf of its board of directors, particularly major stockholders Henry Sy Jr., Robert Coyiuto Jr. and the State Grid of China Corp. (SGCC).

Ramon Ang on extending Luzon-wide quarantine: Between life and money, I’ll choose lifeRamon Ang on extending Luzon-wide quarantine: Between life and money, I’ll choose life

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 1) — Business tycoon Ramon Ang downplayed the negative impact of the enhanced community quarantine on businesses, saying he’ll “choose life over money.”
“At this point, I think what’s important is life [more] than money," Ang said in an interview with CNN Philippines. "Money we can make again, but life—once you lose it, forever no more. So for me, between life and money, I’d choose life.”
The San Miguel Corporation president and chief operating officer said he supports the extension of the enhanced community quarantine if that means saving more lives from COVID-19.
“We have to be sure that when we’re going to lift it on April 15, we have already flattened the curve,” he said, adding that if it were up to him, he would “lift [the quarantine] at least by the end of April or May 15.”
A lawmaker has earlier proposed to extend the Luzon-wide quarantine, arguing that the Philippines is still grappling with the health crisis. The health department has so far recorded 2,311 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Of these, 96 have died, while 50 people have recovered.
Initiatives in response to COVID-19
For its part, SMC has launched a number of initiatives to assist those affected by the pandemic. This includes a P181-million worth of food donations to poor communities.
The corporation also has earlier earmarked ₱500-million to purchase personal protective equipment for health workers on the frontlines.
Ang said they have already coordinated with the Department of Trade and Industry in sourcing PPE from local manufacturers.
“Most of these are going to be manufactured in the Philippines — in Clark, Subic, all these export processing zones,” he said.
“I think we should be able to quickly give away these safety equipment because it’s locally-manufactured,” he added.
SMC has also donated over 100,000 liters of free alcohol to hospitals, local government units, and the police.
Ang had earlier called on other businesses to likewise utilize their resources to assist COVID-19 frontliners.
“We also invite other businesses to join us in this initiative and work together to support our selfless health care workers on the front lines of this crisis," he said. "We are all in this together."
^ ang has had a terrible year so far. w/ his family tragedy and some of his key business interests losing big a$$ wads of cash, his personal views may have had been put into a ringer and thus layered into a sobering perspective.
It's ironic that billionaires usually say that money is not important ... and yet they're not giving away all of their wealth ...
At least he is giving away something .
