PNP FB Admin First to Abuse Cybercrime Law | Filipino Freethinkers

PNP FB Admin First to Abuse Cybercrime Law
Posted on 01 October 2012 by Red Tani.

UPDATE: PNP has taken down the incriminating FB thread.

The Cybercrime law hadn’t even taken effect, but that didn’t stop the Philippine National Police (PNP) from abusing it. At least that’s what the admin of their Facebook page did when they encountered an unwelcome comment.

The comment was a response to PNP’s post about criminology students doing poorly in English. Here’s a screenshot just in case they delete the comment, too:

I say “too” because right now these are the only comments I can read out of the ones included in a screenshot that is spreading all over Facebook. Here it is, just in case they get Facebook to take it down as well:

As several commenters have pointed out, the law doesn’t take effect till Wednesday, October 3. Yet the “CIDG Anti Transnational Crime is now conducting background investigation against” the commenter. This may or may not be true, but one thing is certain: some who read PNP’s comment are now thinking twice about speaking their mind. And when anyone is afraid of exercising their right to freedom of speech, something is definitely wrong.

Thank you, PNP, for proving that the Cybercrime Prevention Act (AKA Cyber Martial Law) must indeed be stopped. And f*ck you.

That's what I'm worried about, the law being abused by certain authorities. To the point na mawawala na yung freedom na nakasanayan natin. Things won't be the same in the internet as it was before once this law takes effect. Wala pa nga, tignan mo na. What if maka-ilang buwan na maka-lipas, ano kaya mangyayari?

Not saying the law is entirely bad, in fact, it can hinder people from doing things beyond morale. But then, the law is too broad as pointed out by Guingona. That's what they need to work on if they want this to work properly.

So much for the so-called Philippine Democracy. Say hello to the upcoming e-martial law.

I wonder what will happen to Tsikot once this new law takes effect. New rules probably? Or totally shut down the politics-related sub-forums?

Hugas kamay ngayon ang PNP sa issue... Pati yung offending PNP FB page nawala.

MANILA, Philippines - One "warning." That's all it took for Filipinos on Facebook to lash out against the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Facebook on Monday, October 1.

The PNP, through a Facebook fan page, warned users against "using foul word against [their] police officers."

"Foul words against our police officers can be used as evidence now to file a case against you in a court of law," the post read. As of posting, the page no longer exists.

PNP spokesman Chief Supt Generoso Cerbo Jr. however told Rappler that the statements made on their Facebook page are not official.

As of late Monday afternoon, the account was already closed. Before this, it had close to 9,000 "likes," according to a Facebook commenter.

"Di kami nagrerelease ng statement through Facebook," he said, adding that the PNP only makes statements through their official website. (We don't release official statements through Facebook.)

Users immediately criticized the person behind the post for what they say was an infringement of free speech.

Cerbo said that they are currently investigating the matter.

"Yung klaseng statements na ganyan, di kami nag-iissue," he said. (We don't issue those kinds of statements.)

On a different PNP account on Facebook, Cerbo reiterated his earlier statement. The second account first became active on Facebook in 2011 and has 752 subscribers.

"The PNP categorically denies any official connection to a message which appeared in one particular Facebook account found by many to be offensive, threatening and malicious," he said through a status message. -Rappler.com
