Torque vs Horsepower -- how do you use it?

In extremely simplified mechanics, Horsepower determines how fast a vehicle can travel. Torque determines how quickly that speed can be reached.

(Using this model as explanation, you can therefore determine that:
HP = mph, whereas Torque = 0-Top Speed in xx seconds)

That's what I notice with 1KZ Prado engines with intercooler turbo. The take off is so full of power. But loses steam when going over 100kph.

hp= acceleration

which engine is better...higher torque or higher HP?
