Hello Guys, maybe you can help me. My van Mitsubishi Star Wagod 4D56 engine seems to run only on third gear. Even if I switch on and off the Overdrive button. When I travel at 60 KPH it seems the is only in 3rd Co'z when the needle goes up to 60 KPH and above the tachometer seems to follow the speedometer. The van Revs high on higher speeds of more than 60. Is it normal? And another thing, how would you know if the turbo inter cooler is still working or not? Is there a good mechanic you know where I can get my van checked? Thanks. :

You could also have a problem with your turbo. I also have a starwagon and my turbo hits when i'm a little over 65Kph or when my RPM reachers 2K. BTW, did this occur only recently or have you been experiencing this for a while now? Did it occur instantly or gradualy? If gradually, you might have some usual wear and tear problems, or clogs in the inlet or outlet pipes/hoses.

As for the overdrive, try this test: drive along the highway without the O/D on. when you reach aroundn 80-100 kph, hit the O/D button. You should feel a ...surge and feel as if somewhat your Delica is freewheeling or something. With the O/D off, your tach should read around 2.5k-3K at 80kph. With the O/D on at 80kph, it should go down to 2K RPM.

Here's a link where you can get some info on turbo chargers and how to perform basic diagnostics: http://turbotech.com.au/trouble2.htm

    Good luck.

    sir,
another way of testing the overdrive is:
while driving at high speed, say around 60-80kmh, release the accelerator, switch o/d on and off. you should feel that the vehicle slows down in a jerking motion. same concept with engine braking. if it does not, check the solenoid of the o/d inside the tranny.
if it does, the o/d is working. next step is to adjust the "tiptoe" cable or shift cable. medyo trial and error ang gawa nito to suit your driving habits.
its the cable beside the accelerator cable. it is marked with a orange sleeve. accelerator cable is marked with a black sleeve.

A friend of mine has a Starex A/T (ala 4D56 TDIC engine) whose auto tranny shifted only between 1st and 2nd gear (around 90Tkm on his odo when this problem happened) and wouldn't shift further. HARI casa wanted to overhaul his entire automatic transmission. He ended up going to a auto repair shop in QC referred by gray-market Starex dealers and the shop replaced an electronic chip called the "shift-position sensor" and that fixed the entire thing.

Could your problem be something of this nature?

You could ask around with those repair shops who specializes on the Starex since they are very familiar with the 4D56TDIC engine and I presume they have similar electronic controls with the original Mitsu 4D56TDIC engine.

Thank you for all the reply. Probably I know nothing about the Turbo & Automatic Transmission. I tought diesel engine runs on high RPM but since reading a lot about forums on Diesel, turbo and Delica. It was then I notice those problems. During acceleration from 0 to 60 KPH I can feel the gear shifting at around 2K RPM, but when it's more than 60 KPH the RPM does not lower down, even if I reach 80KPH the RPM is around 3K, 100KPH it's already at 4K+. I tried to switch on and off the O/D button at 80KPH but there is no difference on the RPM.
I tried checking under the van and have noticed that there are two wires on the tranny that are disconnected but I can't seem to find the connection. And the turbo has some oil in it but I don't think it's coming from the turbo itself since inspecting it I also found oil on another unit on top of the turbo (I think it's the EGR) that has an oil leak. Do any of you know a good shop where I can bring my van for a check up? Thanks a lot for all your help.

I have tried all your recommendations. Thanks for all thye replies. I have brought my van to a shop and have it change the ATF Fluid again Dexron III, then clean the filter in the tranny, I tested the fluid that was drained and it's still in good condition. Tried to clean the turbo and check if it's in good condition. The mechanic says it working fine and change also the engine oil with Delo Gold. But flush the engine with a cheaper brand for 10 minutes then change to Delo Gold and new filter. Still the same problem with the O/D. So tried to go to A/T specialist to know what could be the problem with my O/D. Without doing any test or inspection on the van, I was quoted with overhauling the whole tranny and would cost me 30K+. I went out the shop and did not come back. I think that shop is really just for business not for customer satisfaction. Could you help me find a good shop for my tranny. Thanks again.

If it's going to cost you P30k for the overhaul I'd go and look for a surplus Auto Tranny. Is your rig a Delica? Log on to 4x4ph.com/forum. PM wasted23 - he just saw Delica Auto Tranny's being sold for as little as P2k in Blumentritt.

    Hope this helps.

i don't think you have a problem on your turbo as well as egr's, when chemrez tested your vehicle last saturday for smoke emission it even passed. It's your tranny that has a problem maybe it's those two wires you've mentioned, might as well have it checked sa ibang shop para masuri talaga.

yes, its true! delica trannys costs 2k when you buy the engine... i guess if its just the tranny alone its 5k, 4x4 matic... of course you can haggle

dont feel bad about your impoerted car,for all we know marami kang matutunan sa repairs in do's and dont's. for sure yung may ari dati nyan (e.g. japanese) seldom mag change oil, dagdag lang ng dagdag ng langis. yang ksi problema ng turbo dpat regular lang pag change oil.. common way to know your turbo is woking well is to hear any whisling noise in the engine when running. ithink it will start hearing it in 20 kph. pag wala kang naririnig sa sumisipol, sira ang turbo mo at ipa check mo..kung k na lahat pakabitan mo ng turbo timer. ist an instrument to condition your turbo kit

Thanks for the reply guys. My friend told me about the two wires that was hanging on the tranny, he says it's only an indication on the 4x4 gears for the Dashboard. I'll try to check the price of tranny on Blumentrit, and your right it's better to change the tranny than to have that overhauled on the shop I went to.

Niwd11 do you happen to know the number of the shop in Bulakan? Thanks

Need your help mga idol, my friend recently bought a mitsubishi GTO, 96 model (A/T). sinubukan ko i-test drive kahapon, i noticed that the when the overdrive is on the tranmission is not working, the engine just revs without the car moving. when i turned off the overdrive, the car worked normally. When i was running at about 30-40kph i tried to turn on again the overdrive, pero sumigaw lang yong engine.

alam ko malaking problema to, pero di na nya masoli (babae yong friend ko at wala syang nakasama nong binili nya yong kotse).

need your insights kung ano problema nong kotse, whether is it worth na ipagawa or ibenta na lang din nya.

    thanks in advance!!!

had a 97galant vr v6 with a similar problem. around 35,000km at high speed over 120km/h and with overdrive on, the overdrive would cut-off and the engine revs freely. if i push the od switch off, the tranny kicks back in at 3rd.

brought the car to motorix in banaue and they replaced thc clutch discs for the overdrive. sunog na raw so hindi kumakagat. meron pla mitsu auto tranny nang ganoon. the tranny never had a problem after that. spent less than 5000petots for the job but that was about 5 years ago.

the manager then was jimmy and he was well versed with mitsu problems but he got sick and had to retire. i think the repair shop is now managed by the owner's son. jimmy was the brother or brother in law of the owner.

i had a similar problem with my pajero 4d56 back then. it wouldnt climb up to 4th gear kahit naka OD on na. it took a while until dinala ko sa Isuzu Cavite, electrical pala ang problema. cost me around 1800 bill unlike those who quoted me sa banawe na overhaul daw worth 150k.

ever since naayos yung electrical, may OD / 4th gear na ako!
