Hello Guys, maybe you can help me. My van Mitsubishi Star Wagod 4D56 engine seems to run only on third gear. Even if I switch on and off the Overdrive button. When I travel at 60 KPH it seems the is only in 3rd Co'z when the needle goes up to 60 KPH and above the tachometer seems to follow the speedometer. The van Revs high on higher speeds of more than 60. Is it normal? And another thing, how would you know if the turbo inter cooler is still working or not? Is there a good mechanic you know where I can get my van checked? Thanks. :

You could also have a problem with your turbo. I also have a starwagon and my turbo hits when i'm a little over 65Kph or when my RPM reachers 2K. BTW, did this occur only recently or have you been experiencing this for a while now? Did it occur instantly or gradualy? If gradually, you might have some usual wear and tear problems, or clogs in the inlet or outlet pipes/hoses.

As for the overdrive, try this test: drive along the highway without the O/D on. when you reach aroundn 80-100 kph, hit the O/D button. You should feel a ...surge and feel as if somewhat your Delica is freewheeling or something. With the O/D off, your tach should read around 2.5k-3K at 80kph. With the O/D on at 80kph, it should go down to 2K RPM.

Here's a link where you can get some info on turbo chargers and how to perform basic diagnostics: http://turbotech.com.au/trouble2.htm

    Good luck.

    sir,
another way of testing the overdrive is:
while driving at high speed, say around 60-80kmh, release the accelerator, switch o/d on and off. you should feel that the vehicle slows down in a jerking motion. same concept with engine braking. if it does not, check the solenoid of the o/d inside the tranny.
if it does, the o/d is working. next step is to adjust the "tiptoe" cable or shift cable. medyo trial and error ang gawa nito to suit your driving habits.
its the cable beside the accelerator cable. it is marked with a orange sleeve. accelerator cable is marked with a black sleeve.

A friend of mine has a Starex A/T (ala 4D56 TDIC engine) whose auto tranny shifted only between 1st and 2nd gear (around 90Tkm on his odo when this problem happened) and wouldn't shift further. HARI casa wanted to overhaul his entire automatic transmission. He ended up going to a auto repair shop in QC referred by gray-market Starex dealers and the shop replaced an electronic chip called the "shift-position sensor" and that fixed the entire thing.

Could your problem be something of this nature?

You could ask around with those repair shops who specializes on the Starex since they are very familiar with the 4D56TDIC engine and I presume they have similar electronic controls with the original Mitsu 4D56TDIC engine.

Thank you for all the reply. Probably I know nothing about the Turbo & Automatic Transmission. I tought diesel engine runs on high RPM but since reading a lot about forums on Diesel, turbo and Delica. It was then I notice those problems. During acceleration from 0 to 60 KPH I can feel the gear shifting at around 2K RPM, but when it's more than 60 KPH the RPM does not lower down, even if I reach 80KPH the RPM is around 3K, 100KPH it's already at 4K+. I tried to switch on and off the O/D button at 80KPH but there is no difference on the RPM.
I tried checking under the van and have noticed that there are two wires on the tranny that are disconnected but I can't seem to find the connection. And the turbo has some oil in it but I don't think it's coming from the turbo itself since inspecting it I also found oil on another unit on top of the turbo (I think it's the EGR) that has an oil leak. Do any of you know a good shop where I can bring my van for a check up? Thanks a lot for all your help.

I have tried all your recommendations. Thanks for all thye replies. I have brought my van to a shop and have it change the ATF Fluid again Dexron III, then clean the filter in the tranny, I tested the fluid that was drained and it's still in good condition. Tried to clean the turbo and check if it's in good condition. The mechanic says it working fine and change also the engine oil with Delo Gold. But flush the engine with a cheaper brand for 10 minutes then change to Delo Gold and new filter. Still the same problem with the O/D. So tried to go to A/T specialist to know what could be the problem with my O/D. Without doing any test or inspection on the van, I was quoted with overhauling the whole tranny and would cost me 30K+. I went out the shop and did not come back. I think that shop is really just for business not for customer satisfaction. Could you help me find a good shop for my tranny. Thanks again.

If it's going to cost you P30k for the overhaul I'd go and look for a surplus Auto Tranny. Is your rig a Delica? Log on to 4x4ph.com/forum. PM wasted23 - he just saw Delica Auto Tranny's being sold for as little as P2k in Blumentritt.

    Hope this helps.
