6 years is typically about as much useful life you can reliably get from a tire, even if if's brand new unused old stock.

The rubber gets brittle over time whether or not it is used. That can mean two things: It looses its grip and/or becomes easily damaged. Either way, it's not worth getting into an accident over a tire's age.

yep i know 10yrs is pushing it. but if car is mostly in covered garage away from sunlight and there's absolutely no damage or cracking (even just micro-cracking), up to 10yrs should be ok. that's michelin's recommendation anyway
