Chances are wheel bearing iyan. Ganyan din nangyari sa gulong ko after some time - umuugong pag bumibilis ang takbo ng kotse. They need to be serviced regularly kasi natutuyo ang grease. More frequently and immediately pag lumusong ka sa baha, else mas mahal aabutin. Pa-check mo na lang to be sure.

The things to remember when having it serviced are:

    1. Nilinis ung bearing at case. Hinde lang sinalpakan ulit ng grasa.

    2. Use high temp grease.

Most of the time, they don't know how strong they are. I had to change one wheel drum because some idiot applied too strong a torque putting back the wheel that the thread gave. Guess what, they said its not their fault when I brought the car back.

In the process, I found out they applied the wrong grease (nagsisimula ng mangulangot iyong grasa), they put too much grease, and they messed up the lock nut. To top it all, hindi pa nilagyan ng silicone sealant iyong drum cover.

    I hope this helps.

Thanks, atumali. That was a very informative post.

I just got back from the local underchassis specialist. As it turns out, the replacement of my tires and the emergence of the humming noise were just coincidental.

The mechanic showed me the bearings for the left and right front wheels and they were very worn out.

Anyway, long story short: they put in the new bearings and my ride is now whisper quiet again.

Just some questions: barring exposure to flood waters, how often should the bearings be inspected, serviced or re-greased? Would you guys consider Servitek to be "competent" when it comes to wheel bearing servicing? Do they have the needed special tools and training for the job? I live in the province, so my only choices are gas station, Servitek, Rapide, and the Kia casa in Dagupan.

Edited to add: By the way, my van has logged 137,000-km in 4 years already and this is the first time I've had the wheel bearings replaced.

kasi open space yan, di naman sealed ang lalagyan ng bearing eh. normally, pag pinasok ng tubig, nawawala yung lubricant nya (o packed grease), nangyayari, kinakalawang. ayun, since may kalawang sya and tuyo ang lubricant, may friction na sya. resulta....sira....

i had a similar problem. lumalakas yung ugong pag bumibilis ang takbo. turned out it was a bearing problem. other culprits might be tire feathering (yung hind ipantay ang pudpod sa gulong). it was an issue on some cars (read on issued sa 2003-04 nissan 350z). you may need to have the balancing checked rin. kung bearing yan, better have it fixed para iwas disgrasya/abala din.
