I drive a 97 Honda Civic Lxi. My normal engine temp is about midway through the temp dial.

However, I recently noticed that whenever I drive at NLEX and go above 100kph (around 2,800 rpm), the engine temp starts to rise rapidly. When I reduce speed to around 90kph, the temp needle returns to the normal level.

I don't experience this when driving around the city or driving a low speeds. I've not attemped to push it for fear of overheating the engine. When I check the water level at my destnation, everything is normal. There are no leaks in he radiator or the hoses.

Any idea why this is happening?

    Thanks.

clogged cooling system or probably a near-busted waterpump...

    Understanding engine temp.

Usually, thermostat start opening at 80-85C and is fully open at 90-95C.
Your fan switch is on ar 90-95C and off again at 85-89C.

Under normal conditions (outside temps <25 deg. centigrade and good airflow through radiator) the thermometer on the dashboard should be just over 70. If it goes towards 90, the radiator on the thermostat is bad. In exceptional cases the waterpump may be bad. Only extreme circumtances(very high outside temps, long climbs, no airflow to through the radiator) does meter go to 90. Even the coldest days or rainy season, the temps should reach at least 70. if not change the thermostat.

I'd say thermostat is bad. Easier and cheaper to replace first than radiator. If thermostat is replaced and still does this have radiator checked, cleaned and pressure tested.

+1 ako kay sir speedyfix, most probably clogged yung radiator mo kaya di maka-circulate properly ang coolant during high speeds...

have your thermostat/sensor checked. i had to replace the sensor of my accord last year coz of calsification of minerals from the water.

and if your losing coolant/water, have the radiator and the valves where the hoses are connected checked for leaks.

    1. Check you thermostat / sensor
    2. Cleaning of Radiator
    3. Pressure test
    4. Pls check also the belt kc baka lang naman maluwag or luma na, pede ding kasi maging dahilan since at high RPM maaring magslip yun belt mo sa pulley ng water pump mo, so di ganun ka effective yun delivery ng water pump mo. Good luck

Agree ako sa mga advice check them all.
Another possible culprit is the oil level, quality, passages and filtration.
Remember water temp is equal to oil temp.
Less oil means hotter engine. Oil level maybe good but circulation is poor.

in some cases din the thermoswitch becomes faulty. it turns the fan on late na and only for a short time. try to replace that sabay narin.

Temp rises at 100kph
