Guys, I need to clarify the following 4WD maintenance items:

1. Re-torque drive shaft bolt
- how is this done?

2. Replace rear differential oil
- a few months ago, I had the rear oil seal fixed * autotechnika then had the mechanic * speedyfix to top-up the "gear oil" near the front of the engine (he had to lift the car to access it btw). is this the rear differential oil or the transfer case oil?

3. Replace transfer case oil
- how is this different from the rear differential oil?

3. Replace front differential oil
- is this connected with the rear differential oil?

answer ko po:pero part-time 4wd po lite ko,e...pero ganun din naman, e..

1.kailangan re-torque, minsan or there come a time na lumuluwag ang bolts.. mahirap maghanap ng bolts nito pag naputol...

2.rear diff oil, easily na napapalitan yan, ilalim din... replace talaga every 5000/10000kms.. basta 90W yan or as stated sa manual.

3.transfer case oil, sa gitna po yan, hiwalay ang filler nyan sa a/t pero nakakabit yan sa a/t... same din ang oil ginagamit sa differentials 90w...or as stated..

4.front diff oil, same as rear diff...

Noob question: 'Di ba yung transfer case oil refers to the lubricant used within the shift gearbox only, that's why iba pa siya sa rear differential oil? :confused:

By the way, my questions are geared for Full-time 4WD or AWD vehicles. For part-time 4WD, additional lang ng propeller shaft maintenance.

2. Yung sa Toyota SUV maintenance guide na hawak ko, hindi naman every 5K/10K ang replacement ng rear differential oil. Saan sa ilalim? Near the rear axles?

3. Applicable ba ang transfer case oil sa M/T? Based sa maintenance guide ko, regardless if M/T or A/T. Or is this the transmission fluid though AFAIK this is different.

4. Same ba ang front & rear diff? Kasi sa maintenance guide iba ang maintenance schedule nila.

ah, magastos pala sa maintenance ng oil ang 4WD?

anyhow, basta ko palit ng diff/-tcase oils every 4 years or pagkasugod sa baha...

nga pala same po ang m/t gear oil sa nilalagay sa diffs and t-case... unless naka-LSD po ang mga differentials..

magastos lang po kasi:
may front diff at t-case ka pang nadag-dag...tig 2-3 liters lang naman mga yun....otherwise same maintenance lang as if you have a rwd ride...

check the users manual. rear and front differential e halos sabay pinapalitan. tingnan mo kung GL5 na kailangang lubricant. transfer case = eto yun kasama sa transmission for 4wd.(no transfer case for 2wd). afaik, separate ang lubricant nila. as always, check the users guide.hth

As a side note better take note din if you have limited slip diff. Iba din ang lubs ng limited slip diff

Tighten until zero clearance then balik 2/3 turn.

2. Replace rear differential oil
- a few months ago, I had the rear oil seal fixed * autotechnika then had the mechanic * speedyfix to top-up the "gear oil" near the front of the engine (he had to lift the car to access it btw). is this the rear differential oil or the transfer case oil?

Nearest the engine will be the front differential beside the transmission is the transfer case. Easy to spot dahil may properer shaft going front. Meron din transfer case na may front and rear propshaft. Always look for the front prop shaft sureball.

3. Replace transfer case oil
- how is this different from the rear differential oil?
Usually same grade as the transimission oil. Sa rear differential depends on the type or the OEM recommendation.

3. Replace front differential oil
- is this connected with the rear differential oil?
In 4WD you have two differential except in trucks where in you have 4wheel drive but in the same/one axle.

usually pag 4wd.... its GL5 gear oil... pero ang ibang casa naglalagay ng GL4 the one usually carried by shell, caltex or petron.... ewan ko lang kung may effect sa wear and tear... though its always good to check your manual for specification.... on A/T equipped vehicles, ATF rin ang linalagay sa transfer case... so siguro kung M/T equipped vehicles, its manual transmission fluid... to check your transfer case, open the fill plug and dip your finger... if color red or something close to red, then its ATF.... if yellowish or brownish then it is manual transmission fluid... the transfer case kasi is the one that receives power from the transmission and it sends it your rear differential and front differential, whatever is chosen....

on A/T equipped vehicles, ATF rin ang linalagay sa transfer case... so siguro kung M/T equipped vehicles, its manual transmission fluid... to check your transfer case, open the fill plug and dip your finger... if color red or something close to red, then its ATF.... if yellowish or brownish then it is manual transmission fluid... the transfer case kasi is the one that receives power from the transmission and it sends it your rear differential and front differential, whatever is chosen....

my liteace is a 4wd automatic, ang ATF is good only for the transmission itself. yung t-case, iba, lubricant, independent of the transmission..

pero eto sa full-fledge/traditional 4wds.. ewan lang sa full-time 4wd, lalo na yung mga bago..baka integrated na sa tranny ang t-case na yun..(like most subarus,evos, vr4s, cSUVs)

if matic replace the atf...

for the transfer case normally 75-80w90 oil

rear diff normally the same

but for honda crv's na gen 1, the rear differential requires atf also. if you put gear oil sira yan for sure.

on my suv, the transfer case is mated just at the rear of the transmission... both are filled individually.... but it is using ATF din similar to the transmission. and this is according to the owner's manual and haynes manual that i bought... so perhaps different brands have different specifications.....

siguro...traditional 4wd system gamit ng lite ko,e...ganun din ang former delica 4wd a/t ko din...

It's best to check the owner's manual. Some manual transmissions also call for ATF. Wow! hehehe.

and my M/T isuzu trooper uses motor oil on their transmission and transfer case.

yun sa transfercase ng patrol atf ang ginagamit. same viscosity ng recomended ng manufacturer. smooth shifting on the fyl from 2hi to 4hi unlike before nun ordinary gear oil lang ang gamit. at the most every 2 yrs ang palit ko.

every kelan po bo nagpapalit ng gear oil kasi meron po kaming strada 7 yrs.na hndi pa po namin napapapalitan ng gear oil kasi hindi naman po siya parating nagagamit and 4wd po siya pinapaandar ko lang po yung4wd pa minsan pero not in the road like atras abante lng po dapat na po bang palitan yun kasi baka masira po yung 4wd namin thanks sir

Nasa manual ang schedule. Atleast chech the level once in a while. Kung sa casa ka nagpapaayos they check it but kung sa gas station, you have to tell them.

for trannys that need atf like fluid we have royal purple synchromax... it's excellent gear oil.... noticable yung difference in smoothness on most of the cars we've used it on.
