Going series 50 tires will slightly affect the speed reading you will get on the car's speedometer. The handling will feel sharper but you will feel more of the road imperfections too. It might be more tiring to you to ride on series 50 tires. Otherwise, there is no issue mechanically with using series 50 tires on your car.

I used to ride on 195/55r15 on my corolla but switched to series 55 for a more comfortable ride.

Not necessarily terribly matagtag... just more so than 55 series.

The difference in weight between 50-55 series tires of the same make and model is a mere 1-2 pounds per tire. If there is any. You're only losing a strip of rubber less than half an inch tall around the circumference of the tire. And worse, if the model you buy in 195/50 is naturally heavier (say, it has a rim protector, since it's a low profile tire), then it may even be heavier, despite being smaller.

This is not to say lightweight tires are not worth it, but that going down in size is not a guarantee that the tires will be lighter.

Unless you're buying it to go racing... and if you wanted to go racing, you'd upsize to 205/45R16... there's really no point.
