2013 Nissan Sentra Teaser - YouTube

Nissan has made no secret of its plans to dramatically reshape its U.S.-market lineup, with its pronouncement that five new models are on the way in rapid succession over the next year or so. Now it’s the Nissan Sentra’s turn in the makeover chair, as evidenced by the first official teaser photo and video of the new 2013 Nissan Sentra in SR trim. Meanwhile, over in China at the 2012 Beijing auto show, Nissan is busy showing off its new Nissan Sylphy (at right and below), the Asian market version of the coming Sentra.

Following in the tire tracks of the recently revealed, all-new 2013 Pathfinder and 2013 Nissan Altima, the next-generation 2013 Nissan Sentra will be officially revealed later this summer in advance of its rollout to dealerships this fall.

So far, Nissan isn’t saying much of anything about the new 2013 Sentra, but the compact, front-drive sedan will no doubt come equipped with an application of its next-generation Xtronic CVT it has started rolling out to its new models such as the Altima. It remains to be seen if Nissan will continue to offer the available six-speed manual. The present Nissan Sentra is powered by 2.0 and 2.5-liter engines depending on trim level, with the 2.5-liter, 200 horsepower Sentra SE-R Spec V topping the lineup.

Given Nissan’s aggressive push to reduce its emissions and promote its Pure Drive eco badge, the new Sentra could receive a smaller displacement, fuel efficient base engine, perhaps a take on Nissan’s 1.8-liter four (an updated version is debuting in the Sylphy). Nissan could also stick with an optimized 2.0-liter, or possibly offer both. We’d be surprised if the 2.5-liter will continue in the Sentra, but we wouldn’t be to see a hybrid version at some point. We’re also hoping Nissan will keep the performance-themed SE-R models in the lineup, or perhaps a Nismo-branded model, which potentially makes sense given Nissan’s recent plans to expand Nismo’s footprint.

The new 2013 Nissan Sentra also promises to be a step up on the inside, with updates to the cabin materials and the latest in Nissan telematics options and features. If it turns out like what we see so far of the Sylphy, it should be a solid-looking cabin with numerous upscale amenities. We’ll know the full story on the new Sentra soon, and we suspect it won’t be long before we see the next two new Nissan models in the product pipeline.

The Nissan Sylphy at 2012 Beijing auto show is essentially kicking off the all-new global market sedan’s launch. Nissan eventually plans to roll out the Sylphy/Sentra in some 120 countries by 2014.

As previously indicated, the Sylphy on display at Beijing is powered by an updated version of Nissan’s 1.8-liter four mated to a version of the automaker’s next-gen Xtronic CVT. The Sylphy has LED lighting accents front and rear, a strong three bar grille, and an overall shape reminiscent of the new Altima.

The Chinese-market Sylphy will be built at Nissan’s Huadu plant in Guangzhou, China. Nissan is also showing three of its EV future cars it has previously unveiled — the Esflow sports car, Pivo 3 urban runabout, and e-NV200 van — at Beijing.

This new Sentra actually looks more interesting than the new Civic or new Mazda 3.
