Trucks are far from perfect but unlike cars which use disposable parts and assemblies, you can actually take trucks apart and fix their problems.

    sir tanyen,

i would suggest the MS. its the newest body and engine in the category you mentioned. it would last you about 3 1/2 more years (introduced in 2008) before you expect an entirely new body from Mitsubishi. facelifted versions of the MS, are of course, a marketing strategy. for instance, look at the key fob. when the MS was launched, the keys came in 2 pieces - one for the remote keyless entry, and the other one to start the engine. now, it is an integrated type with an engine immobilizer. if i am not mistaken, it looks like the keys of the outlander. please backread for the other minor modifications, it has been listed before.

the Santa Fe and the Fortuner are both up for major model changes in 2011.

the Montero Sport has its flaws. there are solutions already. my experience in car buying is to avoid the first generation models. i used to buy cars within a few months after its initial release. the 2010 model which you will eventually get has some issues addressed already. lesser worries for you.
but then again, a truck is a truck. please do not expect the refinement of a luxury sedan in the rigid body of this SUV.

for me, best bang for the buck! mine is a Savanna White 4X2, 200 kms on it, just 2 weeks old.

    goodluck on your car hunting!

    all the best.

Mga sir ask lang mo if this scenario with the alarm system normal.

After driving and I turn off the engine (but the key is still in ACC mode) my mother goes out of the car. After she closes the door, the blue lead starts to blink and after a while the alarm activates (2 short sounds) but does not lock the doors. When one of the doors gets opened the alarm will sound and I have to press the unlock button on the remote to stop the noise, take note I am still in the driver seat and the key is still in ACC mode in this scenario.

normal yan sir. the montero's alarm goes into auto-arm mode after 1 minute basta sarado lahat ng doors. kahit ACC pa yung susi mag alarm yan. dapat nasa ON yung susi para di mag arm.

and yes, normal din na mag arm ang alarm pero 'di mag lock ang pinto.

greetings to everyone. i hope the problems of your units are not very serious. i will still get one, despite some concerns, wag lang sana matapatan ng lemon.

here are some issues i raised with a senior service tech of Mitsubishi diamond Motors:

    1. moisture in the headlights

the 1st few hundred units sold in the philippines had this problem. the first explanation given was that the climate in Japan and in the Philippines are totally different. the Hot weather easily degraded the seals around each headlight, thus allowing moisture to seep in and build up on the lens. teka muna, e di ba sa Thailand ginagawa most of the parts of the Montero? hindi naman made in Japan ang headlights...sino ba pinagloloko ng Mitsubishi?

the fix: Mitsubishi changed the seals in Thailand, and hopefully the 2010 models are not going to experience this anymore.

    2. popping courtesy doorlamps:

this happened to some unfortunate owners. when you exert more than the usual force to close the doors, some cortesy doorlamps popped out of the sockets, onto the carpet, or worse, onto the ground when you open the doors again. the culprit is the short pins anchoring the plastic lens onto the side of the sockets. again, made in Thailand.

the fix: Mitsubishi changed the subcontractor for the lens covers and specified longer pins for anchorage. they claim that this will not affect the 2010 models anymore. i do hope so.

    3. backing up on an incline:

unlike other cars or SUVs, the montero sport does not come with Hill Start Assist, nor the Hill Descent control. instances where you feel like sliding down when you take your foot off the brakes in an attempt to step on the gas does happen in the Montero. Hill start assist and descent control is not a new technology as it has been around with Isuzu, Honda, Subaru. malas lang walang ganyan sa Montero.

the fix: Mitsubishi's advice is for us to use the handbrake!

    4.the annoying loud thud:

this is what the service technicians call backlash. this is not unique to the montero. other diesel engines suffer also, though much much softer. unfortunately, it is so loud that rear passengers would sometimes think na "para raw nabangga" ---this came from the Service tech's mouth
the transmission, and power sent to the rear wheels is the culprit. as power is sent to the rear wheels, be it 4X4 or 4X2, this thud will always be there, if coming from an incline. medyo bitin yata ang traction when power is still being sent to the rear wheels. wala akong alam sa aspect na yan ng RWDs pero yan ang best explanation nila. or baka pinapasakay lang ako?

    the fix: there isn't any!.....

    5. steering column:

this is the sound some units have when turning left or right, from a midline position of the wheels. sometimes, even during at a resting position. the problem is the joint(?) of the steering colums as it is composed of at least 3 subunits. not sure bout that. some units were already replaced. it will not come to a point of breakage, but we can never be too sure. have yours replaced if you are not satisfied as this has been on top of their customer complaints.

the fix: Mitsubishi Thailand ordered the fabrication of new steering columns to replace those units sold in 2008/2009....they are claiming that 2010 models will no longer be affected because the newer units have already been fitted with the entirely new steering columns. i have a friend whou bought a 2010 3.2 SE mid-Feb from Diamond motors. he had his steering wheel column repalced last week. we can never be too sure with what Mitsubishi is telling us.

i am not from mitsubishi. i am waiting for my unit to come. these were just issues i back-read from the voluminous pages of this threadwhich i decided to investigate further. thanks for all the info on certain issues. these were very helpful!

next thread: figures of PMS for the 2.5 4X2 using fully synthetic oil

    more power to tsikot!!
Hi everyone. It's my first time to post here. I have a Monty 4x2 A/T that is a little over a year old with 10Tkms. Just had the maintenance done and I am lucky to not have any major complaints.

Thank you boner1 for the above summary. My only real issue is the thud I hear when I start the engine. It doesn't happen often, but it does sound rather disconcerting when I do hear it. I understand backlash when it suddenly shifts, but from starting the engine? I don't think that should apply.

I've tried to read back as much as I can. Again, count me as fortunate to have a unit with no major problems. Can anyone help advise on my query on "thud" when starting the engine?

*easyman3, I also noted that Mitsu C5 fixed your thud problem? Did this include a thud when starting your engine?

Regards to all and many thanks in advance.
