Josh0027: A few friends of mine have also advised me to look for another Pajero but one of my main concerns is, as a lot of Tsikoteers have mentioned in previous threads, that there aren't a lot of 3dr hardtop and orig LHD turbodiesel intercooled Gen1 Pajeros out there, so I'm just weighing everything thoroughly before deciding if I should pass or not on this particular unit. I'm not really worried about overhauling the engine and fixing up the Pajero since I've already had experience doing that to my two other jeeps. What I'm just really concerned about is if spending that much money for buying and fixing it up will be more than what a Gen1 is currently worth.

Also, I'm only looking for a diesel 3dr hardtop Gen1 Pajero to replace my Ssangyong Korando and my assembled mini wrangler jeep for daily driving.

Had a 1989 4d56 turbo Gen 1 for about 3 years, sold it last year for only P235k. I was really reluctant to sell it after I had spent a lot to restore it, but it was showing a lot of defects.

    * Josh - Try to find one that has fresh interiors, i.e. complete sidings, clips, rubber/plastic mouldings, handles, seats, windows, etc. these items are hard to find and costly to fabricate. See also if there are leaks of any kind under the engine compartment. Dual aircon is a plus, since most, if not all Gen1’s only had a single aircon back then.

    * Ikabod – P180k is too much for a 3-door hardtop Gen 1 that needs a lot of fixing. But then again, these type of Gen 1’s are the hardest to find. How about a Suzuki Samurai?

    * Bladespeed – Carrancho is the Pajero spare parts specialist. Sometime ago its shop was near SM Sucat. Don’t know where they transferred tho.

this was the only pic i have with my Gen 1:

You're right. It's just rare to see a 3dr Gen 1 TDIC hardtop in decent condition, that's why I was considering this unit.

I'd really like to just get a diesel 3dr Pajero since I'm already familiar with this type of engine.

I guess I just have to look for another similar unit with a more realistic price and better overall condition.

Your Gen 1 Pajero looks good!!! You mentioned that engine is 4d56 turbo, is it problematic? Have you installed a dual aircon in your gen1 pajero?

what's the application ba? family use or for offroad?

kasi if you're already set on getting a gen1 (i don't blame you, gen2s still command an artificially high price), i suggest you get the LWB, 5 door version, 1991-1994 models. they ride better than SWB 3 doors. this is if you plan on using it to carry people and luggage over long distances (and pajeros were made for that type of thing).

pero if you're going to use it for trailing, or as a utility vehicle when it's flooded outside and you're the only one riding, get the SWB.

all gen1 pajeros offer only part-time 4wd. some models even require you to step outside and manually lock the front hubs to enable 4wd. badtrip lang ito pag malakas ang ulan, tapos maputik and you're already stuck in the mud.

umm, ano pa ba? i've owned a gen2 tdic 2.5 and the important thing to remember is that the 4d56T engine is belt driven, so careful maintenance is required. expertly done tune ups, regular replacement ng belts, OK yan.

We already have a Space Gear van and an ex-ADB Gen2 5dr Pajero for family use. The 3dr Gen1 Pajero I'm planning on buying is for daily driving, normally just me or my wife driving. Since I already have 2 vehicles with the 4D56 turbo diesel engine and I'm already used to 4D56 engines it would make sense for me to also have a diesel 3dr Pajero instead of the gas engine type.

I saw an ad for an 87 Pajero w/ 4D56 engine(non-turb0) selling at P165k. The owner said it has 200+ kms. mileagae and there's already an oil leak in the engine. If I spend for the engine overhauling, will these be a good buy considering it is a non-turbo engine?

Really depends on the condition of the rig. I would also suggest you first "try out" the power of the 4d56 N/A (normally aspirated) engine. A number of people I know (including myself) are not satisfied with the 4d56 N/A engine.

Last time I checked a surplus 4d56T engine would be in the range of P30-40k.

Just want to bump this thread. Are there any 89's pajero na automatic? I saw one in sulit sabi local but alam ko manual lahat yung ganung time. If it's a turbo diesel engine is 4d56T? How come others don't come with a hood scoop if it's turboed? Thanks for the replies.

Is a GEN1 Pajero worth to buy?
